Yeah happy sky isn't that bad and if you have trouble with it, try fiddling with the screen position or using more sudden+.

Other than that Happy Sky has a fairly easy curve at the beginning, but once you start hitting the Another level 10s, they're probably some of the hardest Another level 10s in the series (while the Hyper level 10s are for the most part very easy compared to other styles). 11s are fairly easy (except Just a little smile ewww) and the 12s aren't too bad with the exception of Mei and One more lovely, but you don't really have to worry about 11s or 12s for awhile anyways.

It's still weird for me seeing so many people talk about starting with Distorted or BMUS...and like, actually being good players. I got in a few months before 8th style released, and honestly anything after 9th or so still feels really "new" to me lol

I started with BMUS and then went on to Happy Sky.....

I think Gold may be good for beginners though, a lot of easy-level Another charts, some easy 10's, and some good 11's to break into (My first 11 was Fascination Max).

Agreed on this (100%). In fact, it's highly recommended to start out with this. Then after which you can start with 6th style (because drill mode helps), 8th style (most number of songs on any pre-9th version), 10th style (best style to start with for beginners), Distorted (easy level 3-4 songs) and GOLD (all normal charts are quite easy).

If you ask me though, don't bother starting with 9th (huge disparity between song difficulties for double play beginners) and 11th RED (this version hates one-hand players)

I definitely agree with this statement, having started IIDX one-handed and being able to beat some 8s and a 9 one-handed. Yes, in doubles you have to deal with your non-dominant hand (unless you're fortunate enough to be ambidextrous), but you don't have to deal with stuff like Karma [N], which was not meant for one-handed play (at least it seemed that way, as I got every other 5 in DD before it). Also, some songs (like THE CUBE and Captivate ~Sabaki~) are actually difficult in doubles compared to their singles charts, so you can actually be challenged by them.

Doubles is actually really really really fun. The only problem is that when you start doubles your singles ability plummets like a fucking rock.
