Default Odd situation

Well I went to go visit my cousine. He's 8. I brought over a couple games. One of those games was IIDX 13th... don't ask why, I just brought it.

Well we played it.... He didn't understand it at ALL... but I just let him bang on the keys for a few songs... For some reason, he really enjoys Tonight. Don't really know why. He wanted to play it over and over. And he got upset when I turned off the game. I told him to look at the screen. I tried to show him the best I could but it was to no avail. Yeah, I know. He's only 8, but still... He said to bring it back when I came the next time... I plan on going on Saturday. So I'm asking... what should I do? I'm thinking of bringing it back. (I don't have my BMUS anymore). I mean, maybe he'll either get bored or catch on. We took turns playing the songs though. Next time I'll bring both controllers and play with him and maybe he'll see what he's supposed to do...

The reason I think he may actually be interested and not just pressing buttons is because he was actually listening to the music and kept trying to turn the stereo up really loud so... hey, you never know right?

Well, what do you think I should do. Any suggestions as to what I should show him as far as IIDX or anyone else try to bring a youngster into the Mania?

The kid's eight years old and likes having cool musical responses to mashing buttons - Let him have his fun. It's not the end of the world if a little kid doesn't catch onto the game itself.

Next time bring other styles too. I can see how IIDX would be entertaining for a little kid. Chances are pretty low that he will really get how to play and with the steep learning curve and such i could see him getting tired of it. Considering the only songs he would be able to play would be 1's over and over again. So any serious attempt to try and get him to play probably wouldn't be very successful unless he wants to play again when he gets older or something. So yeah what Chemist and Trick said just bring it over and let him smash the keys and listen to music. Maybe playing it young will give him interest in it later.

Hm. All good ideas. Thanks. I'll try that. I don't think it's that he was incabpible of paying attention to the notes, I think it was that he really didn't want to. He doesn't get the chance to play video games in general very often so I'll bring 13th and maybe 10th or 12th.... or 11.. I don't know. Well tahnks for your help guys.

Never mind the "learning curve" (and just for the record, Pop 'n Music isn't much better these days). For an 8-year-old, ANY console game that's not specifically geared toward young children is going to be way over his head.

Have you considered playing a few songs on Autoplay so he has some idea of what they're supposed to sound like and what he's supposed to be doing? Take it from someone who's been there...it's the music that's going to keep him going long after the novelty of banging out notes wears off.

Other than that, yeah, bring a little more variety and see how he likes that.

Hmmm, well Colonel Dreamcube, your commerade cousin sounds like a tough one. I would suggest beating him if he laughs at the videos or starving him if he doesn't use High Speed.

I dunno dude, he's 8. I'm surprised he even likes it. He sounds like he's doing a lot better than most kids would it sounds XD
When I showed my cousin DDR back a few years ago when I was really into it he tried it once, bitched a lot, complained about how I was too good and left.

Just bring the game over and let him play it. Then if he actually wants to get good, just keep beating song by song by song while he gets better. But he's only 8.

And if you actually want him to play it regularly, buy US again.

if I were you, (assuming you've got some cash to burn) I'd buy him BMUS for his birthday with a USKOC, it'll keep him occupied for days, and if he doesn't get incredibly bored with the gameplay after a year (I.E, he won't play BMUS much, but he'll play the one's you bring over), get him a japanese IIDXfor his birthday after that...

i have a similarly-aged cousin who really enjoyed bmus when he came over. maybe it's because he liked the rhythm minigame in pokemon diamond/pearl...

pretty much what trick and toast said. let him play it so he likes the songs then maybe when he gets older he will have growing interests in it./ or he might just forget it entirely.

the only thing you can do is plant the seed and see if it grows...

There was a 7-year-old at the last Bemanifest who was no-barring 12s on ITG. (Cool little dude too :O)

Age aside, your cousine [sic] is just dumb ^_^

I don't understand "trying" to get people into playing music games. If they want to do it, they will play when they want to. As for me, I was clearing 9s when I was 8 so I'm not sure if that invalidates my opinion or not.
