I really feel cheated by Premium Best, since basically 80% of the stuff on there has been revived post-9th style. The only stuff that wowed me on there was Ballad for you, Clione [a] and obviously Gambol. Also Really Love was a great revival on the Empress disc. Empress is good by itself.

Whether they're the best is debatable, but if all he wants is more songs to play...

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Wow, thanks for all the responses! I was really not expecting this many. It's nice to see this forum is alive and kicking. It seems like DDR is dead so I'm glad to find another Bemani series that's going strong.
I ordered a copy of 3rd Style off ebay. I won't even be able to play it until I either get a new PS2 or make mine compatible. But Beatmania US is holding me over until then. Just beat my first 5*. I haven't even really been having much trouble, and I haven't had much time to play either. I'll just play a song, and if I hit a rough spot, I'll practice it a few times slower in training mode and then see if I can get through it in free mode. Seems to be working pretty well.
I think I might go with a newer one after 3rd Style for a nice big playlist.
Thanks again for all the quick and courteous responses!

Anyways, proud choice with 3rd style. The first two IIDX games I bought were 3rd style and DistorteD (along with a JP PS2). 3rd style has one annoying feature that you need to be aware off. You have to play through a song in arcade mode before the song appears on free mode. In fact, 3rd-6th have this issue (though I know 6th has a code).
At this point, all I'm missing is 4th and 5th style. I'm not in a rush to hunt them down though I do want to play GIRI GIRI DADDY, Nasty!, BURNIN' THE FLOOR, INSERTiON, DUNE, and Tengoku no Kiss someday since they've never been revived.
So yeah here's my biased opinions on the IIDX games I own.
Empress- Wonderful new collection songs. Premium Best is a very good taste what the rest of the series has to offer.
Troopers- Despite being a "dark" game I was surprised I did not like this game more than 16 or 14. I'd rank this game overall somewhere in the middle for the series.
GOLD- My second favorite game of 2008 (1st goes to the R* game). Amazing AC songs with great CS exclusives. Get this game next.
DistorteD- It's up near the top for me. The Cardinal Gate premise is very good.
HAPPY SKY- Oh boy, my least favorite of the newer games. It's not the timing, it's the HAPPY SKY songs that I find, CONTROVERSY ALERT!!!, boring.
RED- The reason why I did not like HAPPY SKY. After the high energy and club style songs of this game, it was a though swallow going blue.
10th- Get this game third, I know a place in ebay that will sell this game for less than 55 bucks. play-asia will charge you 70 bucks for this game used.
9th- The CORE REMIX IIDX game IMO.
8th- One of my least favorite IIDX games out there. Too many songs use that stock IIDX video with the flying rainbow colors on this game. Can someone be blamed for that?
7th- Crummy sound but I play it for SUPER EUROBEAT.
6th- Has the coolest extras on any IIDX games. This one has a mission mode that will literary teach you how to play the game. Amazing amount of licensed songs you won't find anymore.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | If someone has no access to any 2dx games there's no way you could possibly say that Empress wouldn't be the best first purchase. 80 bucks for 200 songs vs the standard 70 for 90 or so. If they haven't played anything they're not gonna bitch about what's on premium best.
That said I always like to suggest a pre 9th game as a first style. Players that start post 9th generally have a really hard time adjusting to the older games, and there are a lot of great songs on them that shouldn't be missed.

Let me qualify that by saying that if you truly care about play on older styles, you will force yourself to adjust. One can bitch and moan about the differences in graphics but if you actually care about this game you'll see past that. For me personally, there aren't enough good songs that I like on older styles for me to give up the options in newer games. That's just my personal opinion though. Tons of people on this forum think older styles have great song collections. But I just don't think it's enough of a reason to pick 3rd style over EMPRESS.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | Honestly I'm really a sucker for nostalgia. I started getting into 5key music around 1999 via sims and such so obviously I have a strong attachment to the songs I was playing first getting into the game.
Honestly since Empress came out I really can't think of a reason to get something else first for a beginner unless they really want a full collection and see one of the older ones in good condition somewhere at a good price.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | The order I got the games was 7th, 9th, RED, Happy Sky, 3rd, DistorteD, Gold, 4th, 5th, and Troopers.
If you're thinking about getting "older" styles (3rd through 8th), I recommend skipping 4th unless you like the song list enough for you to purchase a game (seeing how it has less than 50 songs) and skipping 5th on account of it sucking balls. Of the pre-9th styles, I recommend getting 7th first. Large song list and decent enough if you're playing 3s and 4s and has challenging songs for when you get better, and if you think about buying earlier games, the transition to games like 3rd or 4th CS won't be as devastating as if you were only to play post-9th. Also 9'o clocks.
As for Red to Empress, the order you purchase them doesn't really matter. The only major difference between the six is that some think that Happy Sky has a stricter timing window compared to the other post-10th styles. Since you're new, Empress is your best choice seeing as how with Premium Best it has more than twice the number of songs than any other game available.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | I like 5th
I'd have to agree that 4th is the weakest of the older styles though, aside from the CS exclusives I'm not even sure it has anything that wasn't repeated at some point.

Probably because they don't have 40 songs like BMUS lol. It's not that the songs are bad, because there's some good ones, just that a lot are on JP games.
