In terms of song selection, all of the Japanese ones are better. In terms of interface and features, BMUS is superior to the first few games.

Some notes on things to expect when transitioning from BMUS to Japanese releases (I'm pretty sure these are all widely-recognized and not controversial):

• Most of the Japanese releases don't require you play a song in arcade mode before receiving access to it in free mode.
• There are a lot more things to "unlock" on Japanese releases, especially songs (IIRC, all you could unlock on BMUS was another mode, plus maybe some artwork and stuff).
• Japanese grading is about a letter grade harder. The timing doesn't actually seem to be stricter, but a "AA" performance on BMUS would be a low "A" on, say, IIDX RED.
• BMUS uses the 9th style interface (right? sorry, it's been a while), so newer games will have some extra features that BMUS doesn't. None of this should cause you problems because it's all optional. You might find the sticky style FAQ worth reading for an idea of what you get when, though it only goes up through DistorteD (13th style).
