So they said PS3 is not going to have region protection. Is this still true? If so, I'd be able to use PS2 IIDX imports on it right? If that's the case I'll just wait for the PS3 to start importing since it's right around the corner.

No, old games still have their regional lockouts.

Region free, you will be able to play your imports. Even PAL. For backups, we're not too sure..

I've heard that games that already have region lockouts programmed into them (IE: PS1 and 2 games) will still have them in place. However, I did a quick search online and couldn't find a source that mentioned if the region lockout extended to last/lastlast gen games. I did find that there are expected to be some backwards compatability issues due to developers not following Sony's TRC guidlines, though there's no way of knowing what games those are at the moment. (link) But keep it in mind if you're planning on using a PS3 for playing PS2 Bemani games, if it's even possible.

As for backups, there's no way in hell you'll be able to play those without some sort of modification.

I got banned from bemani.so and I don't have any blank DVDs anyway, so backups aren't my worry. I just don't want to mod my PS2 due to me lacking the shit for it and I thought it would be easier just getting a PS3 to do it. I'll keep it in mind.

Sony's press release stated that PLAYSTATION 3 games would be region-free and said nothing of the other systems. This is mostly because they are likely still using the pieces from the PStwo in the PS3 so it still has the PStwo's region checks.

In other words, no, it isn't region-free for older games. At all. You could import a JPS3 and play US and JPS3 games, as well as your imports though. Though at the same time, that'll probably run you a massive amount of money that is completely ridiculous and not worth it.

Eggman beat me to it. Let's be honest: if you're going to buy a new system but are worried about imports being playable? Just buy a Japanese PS2 as the PS3 is released. You get a cheap system and something to play until the PS3's price drops, and in the meantime, you miss out on the first models of the system, which, let's be honest, tend to be a little on the sketchy side where Sony is concerned at times.

That's cute how you say "at times". Playstation had horrible overheating problems and PS2 had laser errors. I think your better off waiting a little bit anyway. 600$ for a videogame system? I don't think that's worth anyone's money.

I see no reason to jump to the next generation of consoles currently. Then again, I'm halfway tempted to get the Nintendo Wii cause of Smash Brothers Brawl and the fact that oldskool games will be available for the system!
