i have a IIDX Distorted arcade cabinet near my home but.. the owner of the place don't want to upgrade (cuz it don't make so much money)..
so I was wondering.. for upgrade to GOLD, for example... it's ok to just put inside the original GOLD HDD instead of Distorted one? or there's something else to do? (i think it is but.. before spend money I want to be sure) | |

True (though at first, there were a few who believed that it was just version a Taito Type X arcade hardware system that was lent to Konami...........but I guess that claim was debunked already)
That.......and I think they've now switched the video card to ATI (starting from GOLD).
Plus I think they've also upgraded either RAM or processor (or both) as I have personally noticed that the loading times of GOLD are way fast than on DD (seriously it is........and many people have noticed it as well).
Problem is, no one knows as to what exactly did they upgrade or modify (system16.com is too lazy to update their specsheet for the revised BemaniPC).
Anyways, all I can say is that if you guys are not going for an official hardware upgrade (ie. your gonna do things manually), then be prepared to 'get your hands dirty'.
That and you need someone who is VERY knowledgable in computers (ie. extremely skilled in hardware and software) as it IS a tedious process.

First of all, there's the issue of hardware incompatibilities that everyone else mentioned.
Not to mention if you just pop in a GOLD HDD, you'll still have the DD cabinet artwork. | |

the fact is that.. I can get a Gold HDD at an extremely low price.. instead of pay 3000$ for an upgrade to GOLD, not even DjTroopers =__= | |

As mentioned by the guy above, the most immediate concern is on incompatibilities.

Check out how long it takes to long to load The Dirty of Loudness, played by DJ HELL on DistorteD.
Also, wouldn't you need that USB I/O key thing to go with the new HDD?

Heck I even remembered the first time I played on a Distorted machine (or rather an AC machine at all) when I visited Hong Kong.
Granted, I didn't have much time as our return flight to Manila was only a few hours away (and that you'd have to be in the airport hours before your actually flight and stuff).
So I played one set and my gawd the loading time took too long (like after Happy Angel it took like five seconds before the results screen appeared).
Knowing that if I played more than three games, I'd be late for my flight.........so I just decided to go for two.
Of course, granted, one year later when I came back to Hong Kong, that machine was still there (while ten other locations around Hong Kong had GOLD with e-amuse installed)
On the plus side, it's cheap though (HK$3 per game) so yeah........
------------------------
P.S.
Btw that machine is the one at GOLD STAR which is along Carnavron Road in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon (ie. it's near the A1 and A2 exits of the TST train station).
