I like IIDX, but I think that if I don't understand the basic gameplay mechanics (read: playing with thumbs somewhat well, etc), then it's not worth it for me to shell out for the retardedly expensive controller.

I'm trying to get better, then I may give in and buy a Dao... then again, I'm probably going to wait until I see IIDX on the PS3 so I don't have to buy ANOTHER controller.

If you are really into IIDX and want a better feel for the controller, an ASC is a good choice and will probably add alot of replay value to the game for you.

If you just have one style and are getting bored it's more cost effective to get more IIDX styles and play with those before throwing 200-400 dollars onto an ASC.

There are PS2 -> PS3 adapters, so you don't have to worry about that really, unless the IIDX button config somehow changes.

After having played Empress at the arcade on ACTUAL Sanwa keys with proper TT spacing, playing on the KOC just feels... wrong, which is why I've been lax on IIDX these days.

Like when I got my pop'n ASC, I'd probably play way more IIDX with a proper controller (which in turn will help me play better at the arcade too). Now I just need to save up enough.

From what I understand the PS2-PS3 adapters don't work.

On the box of the JKOC it informs you that the JKOC will NOT work with the PS3.

You'd need a USB adapter then, but those aren't often lag free, and require configuring.

There's only ONE USB adapter that is considered to be "decent" and that was a Radio Shack adapter that was discontinued like 2 years ago.

If you're playing on the computer using A SIMULATOR AND NOT THAT YO HO YO HO HARD DRIVE DATA, get this PCI card and you'll be set after getting drivers and whatnot set up.

What kind of laptop do you have? There may be a docking station that does that supports your make/model.
