I've played for a while, technically speaking (first time I ever played was on an 8th style AC about three or four years ago), but I've only really been playing consistently since January. In January I was unable to beat V, Nemesis, Colors, and Summer Vacation Hyper. In about a week after getting the japanese versions, I passed Mei Hyper. Then I passed a few more 10s, though not many, and my timing got waaaay better out of nowhere. Most of the songs I can AA, regardless of difficulty, are in the 180+ range, whereas before, if I got a AA, it was only barely. I have yet to get a AAA on any japanese version, though I'm not really trying to get AAAs, but I'm pretty sure my first one will be Bit Mania 7key, which I have at just over 186k.
After the timing increase, I didn't really improve much for around a month, then, after having the opportunity to play DistorteD ( ) for awhile, which I sucked at horribly, not even being able to touch my skill level at home, I went back home and suddenly was passing most of the 10s I played. I passed Kecak[A] right after that, which was really amazing to me because I am terrible at anything involving scratching. Since then (for about the last month) I've been continuing to improve fairly steadily in small jumps. I beat Stoic 7key, then about five or six 11s and several of the harder 10s on HS. It's pretty cool, if a bit out of nowhere sometimes.
I think the hardest thing I have passed so far has to be Lovely Storm, and it was completely out of nowhere. But I'll take it.

Though I cleared all level 1 - 7 on HS.

it took me almost 3 weeks just to clear everything in beginner mode
I think my biggest jump was from low 7's to low 9's in about a week, when I started to get used to playing with more than 2 fingers...

Marketplace Rating: 13 | I started playing almost 9 months ago, although 6 months ago seriously. I began doing 2 and 3's. then passing 4's. 5's seem to be a wall that took some time to get though, not my warmups are 5's. Now I can pass most 6's, old system, and many 7's new system. The limit seems to be my finger speed which I am working on. Flashing 7's, and eights are soon, songs like love love shine (7k), etc are within grasp.
V (7K) does not look as hard anymore!

The jump in difficulty from 4 to 5 is quite dramatic in my opinion...But it gives something to shoot for!

Marketplace Rating: 0 | I started when BMUS came out, and passed most 8s the day I got it (had V[h] within a week) So that was probably my biggest growth.
My first wall was with 5.1.1[a]. I could keep the bar up through most of the song, but the pattern at the ending was so uncomfortable for my hands that it took me almost until the end of my first month to pass it. After that, (and Red) I surged up to passing most 9/10s in like 2 months, and then it just kinda stopped there.
I was only able to start passing some of the easier 11s (Click Again, Just a Little Smile, Scorpion Fire[h]) when HS came out, and 6 months later (now) I'm still finishing up 11s (just inazuma, holic, and Go Berzerk left...all of which i've easy cleared) and I can't seem to touch any 12s (Unless Due Tomorrow[a] is considered a 12 now, never heard back about that...such an easy song with mirror)

Marketplace Rating: 0 | You know, I've realized that the change in difficulty levels is almost too abrupt. I played Monday and was having trouble on a few 5's, and then I didn't play again until last night, and now I'm passing all the 5's and now am playing 6's quite well. I don't understand IIDX, lol.

Kinda like this guy from Japan who goes by the handle "LISU"
edit: eh, this is regarding what rmz said about CRH. Didn't see the "multi-quote" button.
