Yeah, sometimes if I don't think about the game too much, I tend to do better. It doesn't really make sense, but that's how it happens.

Just focus and retry a lot if you're only going for FC, I've been able to focus well enough to FC 2180+ SP charts and I'm not a whole lot better than a lot of the players who post in the bemanistyle accomps thread. Score is more important imo, so stop worrying about FCs unless you want to get dj points on SolidStateSquad.

I usually keep a ghost score going on with my combo, so I get kind of nervous when it keeps turning red and then white...... So much pressure, haha.

Zoning out's the key, and it's nothing new. I used to remember kicking arse on mario kart snes more when I was talking to someone and not concentrating that if I was actually thinking about playing. It's also true that you often do better after fucking up, as there's nothing to lose. Hence why the last life of a shmup usually goes the furthest (for me anyway).

I also find it harder to combo songs with large gaps in the notes, as my mind wanders easily and I start filling in the gaps with random buttons. When the notes are streaming constantly, it's much easier to follow them and not think.

I really noticed how zoning out does do wonders, i randomly felt like playing last night around 1am after i came back from work, and obviously i was quite tired but this enabled me to zone out naturally and this really made my Greats flash more and i did FC some of the easier songs so gd stuff.

I have had VERY similar to Stepmania. I feel my head going down and looking dumb as hell, but I finish the song and end of AAA it. Sometimes I will catch myself "drifting", but I usually stop it =/

So zoning is the key for improving scores. But I wonder if it's reliable to do it regularly, or even always do it.

This sort of level of concentration is what got me to FC Smooooch [h] on my very first try (cause I wanted to make the most out of my only chance to play on an EMPRESS machine as well as maximize HKD$6 per game there)

In reality, it's obvious that required skill/performance relative to one's skill level is evident (or something like that). For instance, if you can clear 10s and 11s with ease, then FCing stuff like DoLL [a] is like chicken shit whereas in order to FC or even pass Contract [a] would require higher levels of focus and concentration...........

Something like that

P.S.
Granted, if DJ DOLCE can already AAA all these hard-ass 12s and whatnot, then you could bet that he could easily play 5.1.1. [h] which just one finger (while talking on the phone at the same time) and still FC/PC it

Even if you can clear 11s and 12s, it sitll is somewhat difficult to FC 7s and 8s. I still don't have any FC on scar in the earth (a 3/5/8) on any difficulty, nor have I FC'd New Generation (5/9/10) on Normal. I don't really stress out too much about FCs (except when I was trying to FC Vanishing Point [H], because I was missing in the first 150 notes, and I already had a FC on quasar [H] if I remember correctly) because if I do, I usually screw up at some point, especially when trying to PC something (like getting a recorded PC on feeling of love [N]).

Bah I'm late to this thread.

Yeah I space out all the time when I'm playing, I'm honestly usually thinking about something completely different in detail. My mind just kind of wanders in and out of the game. Also, when people ask me where I focus on the screen when playing a song I usually have a hard time answering. On easier charts I'll generally zone out and just stare somewhere around the combo count, but on songs closer to my skill threshold I'll be kind of moving my eyes around as I play without really thinking about it at all.

That's really the key to being good at 2dx, not thinking about what you're doing.

A somewhat common occurrence for me is that I'll spend an entire song trying to decide what song I'm going to play next. And then most of the time I'll have completely forgotten once I get back to the song select screen. Then I'll just pick something, remember what I was going to play right after I start playing the next song, and then forget again before I get back to the song select screen.

Oh god this happens to me so often. I'll be playing something and think "I really feel like playing the deep striker next" then forget and pick something horrible like bridal festival and remember just as the song starts ugghhhhh

Spacing out is actually a good thing just like word stated earlier in this thread. I used to be excited when I made a 200 combo, but now, it's an everyday thing until I start hitting 700+; now that's when it gets more exciting. I was playing State of the Art [A] today and found that it's almost mandatory for you to 'space/zone out' if you want to keep a high combo going. Also while playing it, I found my mind at battle....subconscious VS conscious. My conscious mind was trying to overwhelm my subconscious mind, which was making it kinda difficult for me to stay spaced/zoned out; this is mainly due to the fact that I haven't played IIDX in a couple weeks, so my mind was working its way back to the "IIDX state of mind".

Secret Technique To Spacing Out Requirement
-You must full combo SPACED OUT (BM4thMIX) to gain the ability to space out.

Secret Technique To Zoning Out Requirement
-You must fail RED ZONE [A], but at least get in the red zone (80%+) at any point in the song. (HARD fails don't count). Fulfill this, and you will gain the ability to zone out.

this is going to scare some people but...
I used to play mame beatmania so long and squint at the songs with crazy keys and then when I would look up at the wall my vision would be all messed up for a couple seconds...
maybe its just me
