I know what you guys mean about zoning out kinda. When I used to do Irish Dancing, where you have to do a lot of memorization, I would always get asked stuff like "how do you remember three 2:30 long dances??" and I couldn't really say. It was more like I didn't have to think about what I was doing, so I could focus on how I was doing it instead. It's like your body knows what to do so your mind can be more involved with the specifics. Not sure how it applies to IIDX but I know that when I zone out in IIDX my timing gets better, and I tend to hit notes that I didn't realize where there until I had already hit them. Weird, I know. Zoning out is good though, especially if you want to enjoy the song you're playing!
Oh, and I tend to look at the combo when I'm playing. That makes the notes more in my peripheral vision, which helps with the zoning out thing. Plus I can time better when I see what judgment I'm getting as I play. Though my eyes really wander depending on the BPM/whether or not there's scratches/how hard it is/etc. I don't care about FCing a song most of the time so I've learned not to get stressed by a high combo.
