i didn't start using thumbs until i started passing 11s and it became a necessity for me due to finger placement. even now i only use one and i have a few 12's under me. so its really all up to play style and if you deem it necessary

Well personally, I rarely use my right thumb on my two-hand playstyle (unless it's a three-note chord).

Anyways, all that I can say to you is that it's up to you whether you want to use thumbs or not. It's just that using thumbs makes it easier for you.

Simply put.

As for one hand play, what you need more is a "STRONG RING FINGER". I tell you, with that kind of ring finger strength, you can go far (far as in clearing Indigo Vision or even Alfarshear's scale frenzy)

I think the thing that holds people back more than not using thumbs is when they refuse to use their pinkies.

So true. If it weren't for me getting accustomed to using my thumbs and pinky (I stricly play 1p side) I'd still be at the 7/8 wall I was at a year ago.

On another note, I can't believe that some of you guys got stuck on 10/11 WITHOUT using your thumbs to get there! You're frickin' machines!

I always used my thumbs. When you're doing quick scales, using the thumb can turn the movement into a turn of the wrist, instead of just a movement of the fingers. I play percussion though, so for me, my wrists have always been stronger than just my fingers.

when i first started playing beatmania (the final, 5 key), i always played center so my right thumb was a must. when i moved up to iidx, i had been using only one thumb until i hit the level 10/11 wall

adding the second thumb pushed me over that wall only to be hit smack in the face with level 12s

YES use your thumbs. Did it frum the start, luckily, because I felt it was rather smart to have a finger available for any button at the same time. And well, it works rather hawsome.
