Default Turntable -- Help needed! (NOT modding it)

Recently, one of my controllers (American PS2 version, comes with American beatmania) started acting strange. The turntable only turns one way, no matter which way you turn it!

I took it apart and figured out a little bit of how it works. When you turn the wheel, the cogs under it pass through two little black sensors. One is for up, the other for down. The down sensor seems to be broken.

I am asking anyone here for possible help in this matter. Obviously, I can't double scratch due to this malfunction. Can I replace this piece? Is it just out of place? Wiring gone bad? The chip that holds both sensors seems to be ok though.

Please help! Also, thank you in advance for your time.

Not quite. The IC on the KOC PCB detects the order of which the two beams are broken, and converts the pattern to the desired output. It acts like a low budget Rotary Encoder.

It's probably one of your sensors are missaligned slightly, if one of the sensors was broken, it wouldn't go up or down at all!

Thank you for the information! Upon closer inspection, I realized that the black sensor is misaligned or dirty. I don't know how I could clean or realign though, it looks fine. When I touch foil to the circuits for the down sensor, it registers a turn, so nothing is wrong there.

I tried blowing any dust out, the way one would blow on an NES cartridge, but with no luck. Do you know what the black piece is called, maybe I can get another one and solder that in.
