Total Tokens: 403.73 Donate Tokens | Which way should I go to change my playstyle? Alright, I'm at one of those points where I'm considering changing my hand position a little. Right now I use left ring 1, middle 2, left index 3, then right index 4,right thumb 5, right middle 6, and right ring 7. I want to get better at scratching but I'm conflicted as to what I should do.
Should I teach my right hand to move more and use my right thumb to hit 3 and 2 on heavy scratch areas with weird chords? Or should I teach myself how to use my left thumb to hit 2 and 3 while scratching/aid in playing? I ask because a couple months ago I taught myself to use my right thumb and it made scales tons easier, and I jumped from doing 8's to 10's in a month, but I'm noticing scratching is my weak point, especially arcade dimensions (I'm getting a dao so this is an issue). So whats the better route?

When you're hitting keys while scratching at the same time, use your left thumb to hit keys 1 or 3, while using the left index to hit 2. After that, learn to be more flexible with your right hand to cover for the left hand, while learning to still hit the keys 4, 5, 6, and 7 (the flexibility of the right thumb will help greatly in this). I never have to use my thumbs to hit any of 2, 4, or 6.

Sure it may require more strength of your right hand and it may be more straining. But seriously, keeping your right hand independent helps really well esp. on scratch runs.

Also, once I just thought "I have to somehow hit every note that comes down no matter what", I stopped playing so mechanically and now to be honest, I don't even know what the fuck I'm doing and I can barely read the charts, but I'm passing 11's as where a month ago I was still stuck on 10's.
But take all that with a grain of salt because in all honestly probably everyone on this thread could kick my ass at IIDX, but, I dunno, that's what worked for me so far so, in my opinion!

Since you are getting an arcade controller I would suggest substituting your left thumb for keys 1 and 3, which is what most of the players seem to do in the arcade.
I could never figure out how to do this/haven't had the patience to get it, so I never bother.

I scratch with my left ring finger as opposed to my pinky and using my thumb for keys 1 and 3 make things alot simpler as opposed to scratching with the pinky, middle finger key 1; index key 2 and thumb key 3.
Then I get to the sections with 1/3 chords and smash my palm into the controller. Works almost everytime unless there's a 1/2 roll beforehand.

You won't have a problem then with songs like Make Me Your Own or Gigadelic.
Nice choice of playstyle.
