Default why no licensed jpop on IIDX?

I was playing IIDX the other day and heard a cover of the Asian Kung-Fu Generation song "Rewrite" being played on Gitadora V2 and I was so surprised I think I failed my song. I've noticed that lots of anime related songs (DragonBallZ) and other mainstream JPOP (Ai Otsuka - Sakuranbo) are on GitaDora and Pop N Music but are surprisingly absent from IIDX. Is there a reason that IIDX never includes anime and licensed Jpop music in their song lists? Is it because its a catering to a different audience?

Judging from the licensed music available on Beatmania US I must admit that having licensed music on IIDX was very disappointing. But I'm wondering if I will ever see anime/jpop music on a IIDX?

Would Red Rocket Rising be considered a license? It's by BeForU, but it's avex.
I think it would be a good choice, but the types of J-Pop would be a touchy subject.

BeForU is still part of Konami after moving over to avex, so no.

Konami could if they wanted too, but they choose not too. IIDX generaly is geared to the more mature folk, while pop'n and GF are geared to a more general audience. It really comes down to what audience they are trying to appeal too.

And yeah, IIDX has some j-pop licenses but they aren't really super popular per se.

That and the fact that licensed music costs a fair bit of money, especially if you license the music for both the AC and CS versions of a particular game.

It may not seem like it, but Konami shells out a bundle for pop'n music. It's also one of the reasons Konami has backed off in releasing licensed music in IIDX - it simply costs alot.

Exactly. Licensed songs cost a lot and it seems like most IIDX fans like the Konami Original stuff more than anything -- so licensed songs aren't really worth the investment for Konami it seems.

They've also tried the whole "licensing" before. I'm sure that if it were successful they would have kept on finding new tracks to license and put into their games.

I've noticed that they usually do covers of popular songs "bloody tears" (although still konami, remade and adapted for IIDX.), and "shining ray" (janne da arc, also ending theme for "one piece") from GF/DM. Not sure how it ties in with licensing, but it still gives the players something familiar while saving konami some money.

Well, the GF/DM series has tons of covers of real songs. That's just one of the main draws of those games. It still costs Konami money to license the covers, but not as much as licensing the real non-cover versions.

...WTF.
Heard of m-flo? They're licensed, they were in early IIDX titles. And hey guess what
J-ROCK IS DIFFERENT THAN J-POP. L'Arc~En~Ciel wouldn't be on beatmania.

So umm... there is already licensed J-Pop on beatmania... yah. And some bemani actually GET licensed (see BeForU, teranoid)

Also, what about ALL the Avex licenses? It's eurobeat, but still. I know that Heartbeat, Remember Me, NIGHT FLIGHT TO TOKYO, those ARTISTS are NOT bemani (Konami Original).

I thought his post was implying "recent" IIDX games, not ones from 7 years ago.

But yeah, that is true.

Pop'N'Music, Guitar Freaks, DrumMania. Those are all already set for covers/licenses.

If you really want license:
JOUJOUKA
Ken Ishii
Hifuni
Takkyu Ishino
etc. etc. etc.
And other J-TEK. Even though it isn't mega popular, there is your license.
Also, JOUJOUKA and Ken Ishii are most prominently known from Rez (I heard JOUJOUKA from Rez andd now how Are You Elovetric? I own Jelly tones by Ishii) and Takkyu Ishino wrote I believe a theme song for Ghost in The Shell for PS1 (hence his song Ghost In The Shell O___O)

Consider the situation for Pump It Up, a game that involves licenses from South Korea almost exclusively, as well as for the occasional song from other part of the world:

The new song count for recent mixes have fluctuated between 20-40 new songs, so that PIU does not get nearly as many new songs per mix as IIDX, DDR, pop'n, etc. The reason for this? Getting licenses from artists associated with labels is expensive... so thus Andamiro cannot afford to put THAT many new K-Pop in a new mix.

Now, although Konami is a larger and richer company than Andamiro, it costs a LOT of money for licenses, as above posters have already stated... and there's just no reason to spend so much money on popular licenses with such a large amount of in-house artists with eclectic styles to choose from... not to mention cutting the budget for further development of IIDX.

If you have 52 new songs in a mix with 4 avex songs, that's 4 new Konami Originals you missed out on. I like originals better. Wouldn't be much to look forward to listening to in the next mix if you had heard all the songs previously.
