Anime Expo 2008(Sure, 2 Months Away, But Close Enough To Make A Thread, Right?)

Alright, it's at the Los Angeles Convention Center this year, so easier (or harder, depending on what you've been used to) for the out-of-state fans to get to, but more importantly for us in-state, the big difference from this one and the last, oh, 5-6 years is that there aren't really any adjacent hotels to the convention (unless you count the Hotel Figueroa and Holiday Inn that are across the street from the Nokia Theater where the concerts/ceremonies will be held). That plus because it is Downtown L.A., parking will almost definitely be hard to find.

But on the bright side, I just need to take a bus 2 minutes from my house to get there instead of renting a hotel room.

So who else is going and is anyone else planning to partake in some late night AX Arcade (hopefully if they have it in the convention center) debauchery?

I am planning to go with a few friends from school, trying to figure out if getting a hotel room would be easier since LA is still quite a drive from we live. To be honest I don't particular like LA, I wish it was in Anaheim, as I drive that way for school anyway. My first one was 07 and my friend wanted to drive to LB everyday, I was like, HELL NO. So how close are the motels? Within walking distance?

You really wouldn't want to be walking anywhere late night in L.A. especially when the ghetto is a block from the Convention Center.

Haha, I have done it before, the cops scared me more than the people. I had to find an ATM around 11 at night in Downtown, and I was once stranded with no gas at 1am in LA.

But I'll take your word for it since I rarely venture to LA at night.

Eh, well the walk from the CC to the hotels isn't that rough. The only things in between are the Staples Center and that Nokia Theater I mentioned, which the area around it is usually lit up very brightly.

Even so, should you stay at one of the hotels they have listed, you get to use their free 24-hour hotel-to-Convention Center shuttles.

Sucks for me since I'm staying with a friend that lives 2 blocks away, but ce la vie.

I don't know about y'all, but I for one don't really care for the live entertainment or this year's guest speakers. It'll be merchandise, arcade, and attending the cosplayers' hourly "wardrobe malfunctions" outside the exhibit hall.

Hmm, as long as NIS and Atlus are there I am fine. I mainly stayed in the Dealer's Room and only when to the skit thing because my friend did one.

I wonder how much not-all-that-much-seen-around-here bemani the arcade might get. 2 years ago they had BMIII Complete (even though there's a BMIII 7th Append near me, it would've been nice to try it out), and last year they had some anime-theme version of Pop'n, DanceManiax 2nd Mix J-Append, and GF/DM V. My hopes are that they bring DMX2 and a newer Pop'n.

Thankfully most of the people going to the arcade are there for DDR, Initial D, or Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3. Which the last of those I may partake in, depending on the price ($1.50 a play? Fuck that noise.)

Nothing makes you question why the fuck you paid full price for this like seeing a giant crowd of girls rushing to a guy yelling "FRESH HOT YAOI" in (admittedly) one of the better "carnie" accents I've heard around.

That being said, this will be unavoidable for me as I am taking a lady friend to her first anime convention and she's already making plans to make a beeline for this booth. If you see a guy near there minding his own business and blatantly reading an h-manga out in the public, that will be me trying to act as macho manly and as non-"he likey da doods" as possible. That or I'll be singing and dancing for money.

Anyone interested in paying a desperate man to sing GET UP'N MOVE?
