INTRODUCTION:
(This is a recap of my last two tournaments, along with a speech to the community as well. If you want to skip to the important stuff, skip down to the next section) =P
With the release of the R21 patch for ITG2, people can play just about anything they want from their USB flash drives. Whether it be something from DDR, a Stepmania keyboard pack, or something you stepped to show off to your friends, you could do it all. I thought it was one of the best things to ever happen to dance games, so I came up with a tournament idea in an attempt to promote the R21 Patch.
I decided to step songs (along with the help of people such as Chris, Nate, and Jai) that would be unreleased until the day of the tournament; a round-robin format. Basically, these are sightreading tournaments. Song difficulties ranged from straightforward 7-8 block songs in the first round, all the way up to gimmicky 12-13 block songs in the semis on. Most stepcharts were praised, while a select few were garbage. Although, I have learned ALOT from the past two tournaments, and I assure you that there won't be anything like Blue Mirage and Violently Car again.
My last two tournaments have been two of the greatest and most successful tournaments I have ever been involved with.
See for yourself! The most recent one, which took place back in April (at FnG, NJ), was definitely more epic than ever. Due to the rising popularity from the first tournament in December of '06, I promised I would host another one of these sometime this summer. Now for the bad news:
Unfortunately, due to personal obligations, I'm really sorry to say, but there is no way it could happen. I really wanted to host one as well due to the fact that alot of people are home from school, college, or anything else like that. Well, now that the summer is almost over, and with other huge events happening (COTC5, Digital Life, as well as many other things), it'll be impossible to squeeze in a date for my tournament anytime soon.
UPDATE: With FnG being gone (along with it's machine) and it's possibility of reopening in the air, I lost the chance of holding my 3rd edit tournament yet again do to uncontrollable circumstances. So I'm shooting for late April 2008, and I really hope that no last minute crisis will come up this time. Just keep in mind, I never forgot about this, and I want this to happen just as much as you all do. Bear with me, and I promise that this tournament will be well worth the super long delay. Thanks! =)
THE RULES:
-Basically, this is a
sightreading round-robin-style tournament consisting of
unreleased custom songs/charts that will be
made mostly by me, along with a select few. Nobody will see them until the day of the tournament.
- There is
no limit to the people who can enter.
- Round 1 = 2 songs. (one 8 and 9 block song). I’m cutting the first two rounds to two songs each since these are the slowest rounds.
- Round 2 = 2 songs. (one 9 and 10 block song).
- Round 3 = 3 songs. (one 9, 10, and 11 block song). I’m raising it to three songs here and keeping it at three for the rest of the tournament to make up for the lack of songs in rounds 1 and 2.
- Round 4 = 3 songs. (one 10, 11, and 12 block song).
- Round 5 = 3 songs. (one 9, 11, and 13 block song).
- Final Round = 3 songs. (one 10, 12, and 13 block song).
- Total songs used: 16. This lasted about 6-7 hours last time, but it should be even faster due to what I did for rounds 1 and 2.
- The following mods/type of mods are the
ONLY mods allowed:
Speed Mods, and C-Mods with my approval.
Persective Mods (hallway, overhead, etc etc)
Note Skin Mods
Mini
- All competitors will be allowed to watch while others play.
- The song title and artist will be
BLANK, so the only things you will see are the BPM and the difficulty of the song. This is to sort of try to block out knowing what you'll be expecting beforehand (if you know the song title, that is), along with adding more suspense to the crowd. It will also save time due to the fact that I don't have to remove my USB and switch the songs after each round ends. All of the songs that will be used on the day of the tournament will already be on my USB from start to finish, and will be titled accordingly (Example: A song will be titled Round 1 Song 1, Final Round Song 1, etc etc). For those of you who entered my tournaments at the 2nd Mid-A Meetup and/or COTC5, you'll know what I mean.
- During the first round, people will play in a random order.
Before the tournament begins, I will play the first round's edits to make it fair for everybody. I will do this
ONCE AND ONLY ONCE at the starting time, so make sure you're there on time!
- After the first round, competitors will play in an order determined by their performance in the previous round. Last place will play first, first place will play last. I will
NOT play these edits before the round begins.
- The higher seed will now have the option of what side they choose. An exception of this is the first round.
- Edits will become harder and harder as the tournament progresses. For Round 1, the difficulty will range from 8 to 9 footers. This will increase during each passing round... as shown above.
- Failure is
NOT taken into account here, so disregard the life bars. Each step is just as important as the last, so keep going, even if you fail!
- Scoring is
CUMULATIVE and as follows:
Fantastics: 3 points
Excellents: 2 points
Greats: 1 point
Holds: 2 points
Rolls: 2 points
Mines: -5 points
-Your score for the round is determined by the
total scores of the 2 or 3 songs. (the circled part of the screenshot)
-Here is an example of how your score will be determined:
ELIMINATION: 41+ players: (aka. A MIRACLE)
-I might have to make it up on the day of the tournament if it gets that high. All I know is that Round 1 WILL be shortened to one song, hahaha.
32-40 players:
Round 1: The players with the top 24 scores will advance to Round 2. All others will be eliminated.
Will be shortened to 1 song.
Round 2: The players with the top 16 scores will advance to Round 3. All others will be eliminated.
Round 3: The players with the top 8 scores will advance to Round 4. All others will be eliminated.
Round 4: The players with the top 4 scores will advance to Round 5. All others will be eliminated.
Round 5: The players with the top 2 scores will advance to the Final Round. 3rd and 4th place are eliminated, and their prizes will be given out.
Round 6: Top player wins and gets the 1st place prize. The other player takes the 2nd place prize.
25-31 players:
Possibly the same as the scenario below, but Round 1 could be shortened to
ONLY ONE SONG. I will announce if I decide to do this.
19-24 players:
Round 1: The players with the top 16 scores will advance to Round 2. All others will be eliminated.
Round 2: The players with the top 12 scores will advance to Round 3.
Round 3: The players with the top 8 scores will advance to Round 4.
Round 4: The players with the top 4 scores will advance to Round 5.
Round 5: The players with the top 2 scores will advance to the Final Round. 3rd and 4th place are eliminated, and their prizes will be given out.
Final Round: Top player wins and gets the 1st place prize. The other player takes the 2nd place prize.
15-18 players:
Round 1: The players with the top 12 scores will advance to Round 2. All others will be eliminated.
Round 2: The players with the top 8 scores will advance to Round 3.
Round 3: The players with the top 6 scores will advance to Round 4.
Less than 15 players:
Round 1: The players with the top 10 scores will advance to Round 2.
Round 2: The players with the top 8 scores will advance to Round 3.
Round 3: The players with the top 6 scores will advance to Round 4.
*In the event of a tie, a tie-breaker song will be played.* CONCLUSION:
Now that I have figured out just about every roadblock from the first two tournaments, all I have to say is to be prepared for the most epic tournament ever. Coming from a tournament director and someone who has participated in many tournaments myself, trust me, this will be something you will NEVER forget. I promise you all that I will definitely do my best in keeping my promise in making this possible, and I will keep updating this post as I put together any of the missing puzzle pieces.
In the meantime, if you have ANY questions or suggestions pertaining to any of the partial information I have posted, please post away in this thread, or hit me up on AIM. I'm usually invisible for personal reasons, but I'm on ALOT of the time.
Thank you all for your understanding, and I hope make everybody happy in the future! :shades:
