Talking DDR Freestylin'

Ok, I'm new here and I've just gotta ask!

Anyone here have any advice on freestylin'?

I mean, when our friends at Bemani came up with DDR, I don't think that they meant for people to be constantly raping the bar...

They wanted style to go along with rhythm!
Anyone still believe this? Dang, I hope so...

Now, as much as I want to, I'm here to admit that I have a hard time lookin' good on the dance pad, and I wonder if anyone has some pimpass dance moves that they have incorperated into their steps, soo... anyone got any?

They didn't. The bar is there so you have something to grab onto if you start to slip or trip. And you can look good by just PAing a song without the bar. But if you want to do more than that, read on.

It depends on your location and who you are trying to look good in front of. If you are interested in true freestyling, the point is to look more like you are actually dancing, and less like you are just hitting panels. I cannot suggest anything to you for this; you should experiment yourself and find out what works for you. You can also go to youtube.com and search for something like "ddr freestyle" and find examples. But it is also possible to look good by just messing around. This is what I do sometimes. Use hands and knees to hit panels, do unnecessary spins, jump on and off the pad, things like that. Things like these will easily impress beginning and intermediate DDR players, but if you want to look good in front of experts, you will have to work a bit harder at it. Just keep practicing until you are as good as you want to be. And most importantly, have fun!

Okay, I know DDR intended actually dancing at one point during their early mixes. But I don't think they intended to go with style (once Maniac and SSR came along).

eh, thats a good point...

You ever try something cool on one of the lower difficulty levels?

Something like spinning or dropping to knees?

I've seen it done, like i said earlier, just looking for opinions on what'd be cool

I always spin on Trip Machine on Expert/Heavy/SSR/Maniac.

Actually, the key to a good freestyle is a song that you can do more dancing than trying to hit the arrows. I dunno how to put it, but there's hitting a bunch of different arrows, and then there's a long set of right arrows. You can look like you're not forcing your dancing to adjust to the games steps.

I dunno how to put it, I gotta explain it better when my head clears up.

Personally, I think using the bar is harder because you can't perform cross-overs as efficiently. Plus, it looks bad unless you use it in a routine. It's easier to dance and look good on the easier difficulty songs and you can have more fun foolin around like 33137 said. Plus come up with your own style.

A good place to spin are freeze arrows, but you need to make sure you keep your weight on it. There are also certain step patterns which spins you around if you alternate feet such as in ordinary world and spin the disc. My whole spin the disc routine is spinning around. At least i don't get so dizzy anymore.

So do you think that'd fall into place if one would have the song memorized?

You don't need to memorize the entire song, just be familiar enough with it to be able to comfortably look away from the screen for a couple seconds if you are doing a spin or something.

If you have your dance routine memorized properly for a song you wouldn't have to remember the arrows because your feet would have a place to be for every move Unless of course you're actually freestyling, in which case, slower songs are necessary and try to get a glimpse of the screen every once in a while and wish for the best.

lolz at sig.

Anyhow, if you want to see some freestyle/choreography for the game, you can check out game tourneys at Digital Life 2007.

Lots of freestylers/choreographers participating in those events

Drop down the difficulty and try random stuff. Try not to slip and fall! Search youtuve for freestyle videos is a good way to get an idea of how people do it. It takes a lot of practice.

Watch dj 8ball's synchronized love with samantha. It's cool and creative.

freestyle is "dead"

that is to say, it isn't done very much. If you want to get into it, just be aware that until you're very good at it, you will probably be made fun of.

if you'd like to see some good freestyles to see what works (and what doesn't) look here:

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

some of my personal favorites are Tyger's Red Zone, Ryzen Xia's Groove, and the team freestyle to Mr. T (Take Me Higher) by Sketch and Vyzor
