I use to play DDR for PS2 all the time till my PS2 totally broke down, so I haven't played in about 3 years or so. I recently started playing Stepmania for about 4 months now, and I hear dance mats work perfectly if it has a USB connector. I was thinking of getting a PS2 Controller to USB converter since I still have my mat, or to just buy a new one. I currently have something extremely similar to the RedOctane Ignition 3.0, The only thing thats different is its probably older and looks different, or should I go buy one of those metal mats. And if I buy a metal mat where should I buy it? Cause I'm on a really really tight budget and I don't want to spend over 200 dollars for a metal mat :P. Anyways thanks!

And by modding...what do you mean? I've modded a lot of stuff in my life, and I can handle wires, soldering, and all that hard-modding shit really well lol

EDIT: strange, they seem to have gone up in price since I got mine. If you are patient and watch for RO to have a sale, i got mine for around $170 with free shipping (which only took 2 days to get to me), but $199 with free shipping isn't bad either.

The AB is a great pad, I have one, I have friends with them. They make for some sexy doubles play if you feel like grabbing a second one (I actually learned to move around the pads using a pair of ABs). They are a little tougher to play hard songs on than an arcade pad is, but they're a great investment.
The only problems that I'm really hearing about them are the arrows cracking, but they still work fine.
If you're not looking for the supreme DDR luxury, the AB is pretty good, and a LOT cheaper than a Flux is.
EDIT: I just saw they have the Afterburner 2.0 now (the one Deathrazor mentioned that is $200), and it appears that the only difference is a different control box that supports Wii and Gamecube. If you want to play on PS2 or PC, just get the original Afterburner that I linked. It has connections for both, so you don't need an adapter for playing SM.

The arrow panels dont crack to easily, I only cracked one of mine and that was after a year and a half of day to day play. But if youre looking for a handel bar this isnt the pad for you. And yeah mine broke... anyone wanna help me fix it?

I've been stomping on that to a certain extent when I get angry over songs, and I've been playing on it nonstop for the past few months everyday. It still plays like new and I still haven't even done maintenance or cleaning yet.
