Default DDR as a regular aerobic exercise

what do you think of this? i quit running a while ago and started playing more DDR to fill the gap. i play for at least 30-45 minutes, with a warm up and cool down consisting of mostly 7 footers, playing hard 9s and 10s in the middle. is anything lost from replacing more traditional aerobic activity with DDR?

DDR is a very aerobic excercise. It'll keep you in shape for sure, and you will definately burn alot of calories in doing so. Last summer I lost 20 lbs.

Other than walking to school from my apartment, DDR is what I consider my cardio. It gets my blood pumping and heart beating a lot quicker, which is more than running did for me :P. Especially after some 10s, it feels like I ran some sprints .

BTW, I lost about an average of 10 lbs. just playing DDR without changing my diet (which is a terrible diet, even for a college student -_-), but since I really need to lose weight (I'm about 6'3" and weight 230ish), I will change my diet to get better effects. In short, with good diet, DDR is just as good as running but you may lose the constant heart pumping if you take long-winded breaks between games.

DDR is definitely a good cardio excersise. You do, however, lose the muscle cutting effect of running. DDR gets your heart rate going, which helps burn fat/calories.

QFT

Any song on Maniac/Expert can already be a neat form of exercise (ie. Seduction Vocal Remix and even Dead End included). Go higher by playing Sakura Heavy/Oni and the gallops and jumps (@ 200+ BPM) really get you're heart moving but a good thing about is that it has breaks (ie. the slowdowns) where you can catch your breath for a few moments......before returning to the high-adrenaline parts of the song again. Go higher again (ala Max 300) and you'll see your feet acting like jackhammer drills moving in alternate rapid motion.

But if you real want something that acts as an exercise both physically and mentally and as well as your timing and patience, I suggest that you try Chaos (especially if you are not familiar with the pauses)

I've heard that some schools in the US have adopted DDR into the physical edu. classes for their students. Anyone play in their school?

I wish my school would do that. HAHA! Each day I would hope to go into the gym, with a DDR machine just standing there. It sure beats doing suicides.
Too bad my school isnt like that thought. Noo. For cardio we have to run two miles twice a week. I guess thats what I get for going to school in Glendale.

I wouldn't completely replace running. I combine DDR/ITG with weights and Karate and it make you look ripped.

I'll agree with some of the previous posters: ddr is cardio at best. Although playing in addition to running has given me really strong legs.

Isn't cardio what is recommended for weight loss? IIRC, cardio is defined as 75-90% of your max heart rate.

I wish I even had the chance to play DDR.
There are no local machines, and I don't have any home versions. :P

Well, I guess I can dream. >_>
