1. How likely is it that I'll be jumping around and thumping on the floor? My bedroom is on the second floor and we live in a townhouse so I'd hate to be annoying people. Would it be better for me tos et it up in our basement?
2. Socks or barefoot? Which do you recommend?

2.What ever style suits you. I usually do with socks because there is less friction and you can move a little faster.

2. Socks or barefoot? Which do you recommend? | I'm going to assume you got a regular "trashbag" pad, so barefoot for that would be a good idea-- but if you start playing 6-footers and above, a soft pad won't suit you anymore, and you're going to have to move up to a foam pad or a metal pad, and I would suggest socks and shoes, respectively.
You will be stomping a lot and the floor will thump as soon as you get up to higher levels, so I would suggest putting it in the basement.

You'll probably want to set it up in the basement, even though you won't be jumping around that much early on, some songs might annoy some people.
Some days I play with socks, some without, it's all preference. Try both.

Investing in to soft pads, metal pads, or even mini hand controllers will definitely catch up to you regardless if you stick to the arcade or not.
The other bemani games, however, have a much more strict learning curve. Thus, making failure a trial-and-error process. DDR being a very hard game to grasp on your first time, would ultimately in short- yes, would save you money if you were not serious about it.
I'm not serious about it now, and I enjoy the arcade feel, and the ooh ahh's of humans.

But having people in arcades go wtf when you do something on Challenge is always fun

Investing time in to it rather than socialize in a public place.
Sounds like Guitar Hero.

2. I would suggest using socks. Cause if its one of the plastic one it should help it last longer. The first one i had i went barefoot and it was ripped and i had to get a new one.

Total Tokens: 472.80 Donate Tokens | Just get a cheap $30 soft pad - I got a really nice one from Amazon. It is less expensive than a typical video game nowadays, and you can just download songpacks via stepmania.
I was well into 9-step songs before I got a metal pad for xmas yesterday. Just don't fold it up to store it - keep it under your bed or something if you want it out of the way, folding those pads ruins the sensors inside of them. And ya, socks are needed to play it for hard crossovers and stuff, makes it a lot easier to give you needed agility in your feet.

2. Suggest socks. Once you are swetty, so are your feet. That that equals a sticky-feeling on your pad.
And I have a soft pad. A 2nd copy of the Konami one. (Since my EX2 one had a down arrow lag. And surprizingly how long it live since the relese of EX2. Oh. And i'm not a hard-ish player unless for 7 or 8-footer songs.
