Getting Area L

So I completed area K, but area L didn't unlock. I think the problem may be that I used an assist on Pluto as well as two other songs. Are assist not allowed? Also, is there anyway to activate x2 or x1.5 speed mods. The B4U "voltage special" is 10x easier to complete with x2 on (I used an assist to complete it). I have a feeling the answer is no, but its worth asking. Thanks guys
