I am going to have a small user comments section at the end. So, if you could help me out by posting.... When you started playing. Why you started playing. If you've lost weight and how much. Other, (i.e. Like multiplayer more, doubles, etc).
Thanks! (Oh, and if you have any research sites, you can share those with me too. )

I started playing in October '04, and really, the only reason why I started playing was that I had started listening to music from DDR. That was enough to drive me to start playing.
As for my weight and health, I've lost some weight due to playing, though I have somewhat of a small build, so it's not all that much. I have gotten in much better shape since I started, and I have a lot more stamina now.
I'm a fairly good player. There's only a handful of songs that I can't pass in singles, and I have AA'd most of the songs in singles, sans most of the 10s and a few 9s. In doubles, I can pass a few 10s and a good number of 9s, though my timing is considerably worse in doubles.
Does this work for you? | |

anyways I guess if you want user commentary here you go:
I started playing in Fall of '03. I played primarily for fun and competition. The exercise was a nice additional bonus but it wasn't really my main focus. I play doubles a lot (although that is primarily more so for fun than for competition since there aren't many people that take doubles "seriously") and I won US Nationals '06 in NYC . I've actually GAINED weight from playing but it's all leg muscle, haha.
that's about it

Started playing in late 2001, didn't take it too seriously for a few months, and then I exploded into a DDR obsession. I never really had significant weight loss, but never gained fat (only muscle). I stopped playing from Fall 2005 to Summer 2006 because of lack of interest/ no new arcade versions (good lord did EXTREME get so fucking stale), but once SuperNOVA machines were in the area I started playing again. Right now I have never had better sucess on Single-Expert, and right now I am working on excelling in DOUBLE mode.

I first played DDR in 2004. Playing DDR Max at a friends, I played untill I AA'd Sandstorm on light. Then didn't touch the game for 3 years. I was bored one day, and was at a bowling alley with an SN machine. And I was bored. So I play one round. Then, I imediatly go home and get my friends Xbox, DDR Ultramix 1, and a pad, by the end of the night, I'm on heavy (fresh from beginer mind you). That was in September, since then I have gained muscle mass. My stamina has improved, greatly, and have made new friends. We meet at the arcade every Friday. I am currently working on doubles mode. I can do most 7s on doubles, and can do ITG 11s on singles. Up to tens without barring.
Thanks guys! Keep the commentary coming!

I started playing back in they year 2002, and ever since I played, I have been hooked. I used to be getting fat, and after playing for a few months, I got my weight under control, and still do.
I have made playing DDR a upsession. I imported a Japanese PS2 to continue playing the series. Later I eventually started going to arcades every other weekend just to play some DDR. Later in the groove came out, and I found out I had to step it up a bit, and build more stamina to complete the harder songs in the game, and I was successful.
At have brought DDR into my middle school, and tested it at my high school, to the point where everyone knows who I am from playing the games at school.
I also enjoyed testing both arcade games, DDR SuperNOVA, and DDR SuperNOVA2, and have met many differnt friends/people from playing the series, especially around when it came around to testing.
I used to play for the challenge, sadly that is no longer a issue for me, but there is always something to go for... Scores. Every time I play a arcade machine I play to get high scores, and just play to have fun, and draw a crowd (this seems to be happening alot since I have been going to arcades way more often then I play at home).
It seems DDR/ITG has only brought good in my life, and I hope it always will stay that way (except for some of the U.S. home releases, those are just sad games sometimes).

I have played DDR since the release of 3rd or 4th (mind you, when I was 3 1/2 y/o) and got slightly addicted because I was pretty much for rhythm (and I still am) and music, being the most popular pastime of the family. The most I have done then was somewhere within the 3-4 margin
By late 2001, I can already pass a good number of 6s, and an unidentified 8 year old ,who can play 7-8s like sluts can play boys, has inspired me to go through to Maniac/Heavy... in one year.
By 2005, I have had many fans whenever I play 8s-9s. The weight control was awesome, and had my speed and stamina boosted quite a bit
Sometime during summer break, I was able to join an arcade group. I had also experimented with numerous other games, and the veteran expertise came out almost flawlessly in each game.
Today, I have improved a bit, but I still consider myself on the same level as before. I haven't been able to go to the arcade much, and even if I did, the DDR Extreme machine isn't even there anymore. My weight gain increased a bit. I really miss DDR. We now have a SuperNova 2 in another mall, but that's not where my group goes, so it's lonely there.
Wow, that was pretty long... I know what you all are thinking now... right?

/serious stuff. Keeps me fit I guess, or it helps rather, I don't play that often.
Started in Mid 05'. Was playing heavy/Oni by Oct/Nov same year. I just play harder songs now.

Total Tokens: 43,929.35 Donate Tokens | I started playing with DDR Mario Mix in January 2006 because I really bought the game for my nephews. I was 35 at the time and working at a CPA firm in Irvine. When I heard that Irvine Boomers was the test location for SuperNova (which was a couple of miles from where I worked), I went thinking I was going to just watch. What I saw was incredible, including Naoki and DJ Taka observing how the general public was receiving the new songs. JSB was even there too. I was really reluctant to try, but Barcade (Ryan?) put in four tokens in the machine for me because he wanted to know the comments from a "casual" player. I guess I was hooked from that point on.
From playing, I went from weighing 180 to 150 within 6 months of a lot of light/basic playing and Mario Mix. My waist size went from 36 inches to 29. My stamina also improved a lot. But, in addition to the obvious physical benefits, there were other things I noticed about myself too. I used to suffer from a lot of anxiety and depression, and I used to take prescription medications similar to what Heath Ledger has (i.e. sleeping pills, Xanax, anti-depressants etc.). The anxiety and depression had made me erratic at work, and I also lost my wife to divorce because of my condition. I can proudly say now I am off all medications for myself, and I know that what happened to Heath Ledger or Christopher Bowman (ice skater that also recently died to overdose) could have easily happened to me.
I really feel very lucky that Barcade put in those four tokens for me. I really think DDR saved my life. I now mainly play in the arcade almost everyday, and I play on heavy/expert x1 (due to Mario Mix) and no bar, and I can pass 9's (including Sakura on heavy). No 10's yet, but I can get to the freeze stop on Max 300. I just have to practice that more.
I am now 37, and I hold a great job at a Fortune 500 company consolidating financial statements, writing footnotes and writing position papers on accounting issues from the FASB and SEC. A friend from high school recently saw me at Gameworks playing. He thought I did not change my looks at all from when I was 18. If he only knew what I looked like before I started to play DDR two years ago. I guess I am looking forward to my 20 year high school reunion coming up.

If Greg Oden is 19, I am 37! | Thanks for the post! Glad you are off the meds. Meds fuck you up, when I was in 5th grade my doctor (who is no longer a doctor anymore because I wasn't the only person that this occured to apparently) started me on an antidepressant, then later up the dosage, then put me on a depressant, then an anti-psychotic, another depressant, then another anti depressant. This led to me trying to off myself, after that I was in inpatient care. The day I came home from the hospital... wow, I just realized that that day was the first time I played DDR...
In short, I feel for you, I have become a lot more stable recently. Best wishes to you Guariche, have fun at your highschool reunion.
