Default Height and DDR

How does your height affect your DDR playing? There's a DDR club at my school, and there are 2 members of the club who joined last year. They were both standard players at the time. Now, the one member who's 5'6" can pass some 11's and the member who's 6'6" can only pass some 9's. A thread was posted on DDR Freak a few years ago saying that it's a disadvantage to be 6'0" or more.

I've read that shorter people can accelerate their body faster and step faster, but being tall might be an advantage on doubles. It also might be more difficult to keep your balance or use the bar if you're too tall.

I'm 5'11" 1/2 and I haven't noticed my height affecting my DDR play, except when the screen is too low.

I'm about your height, and if you are going the DDR X grading scale, I can do 14s yet if it is old DDR scale, I can only do most 9s and few 10s......seldom 10s.......

I'm also around the same height as you guys, and I can do everything up to a few 13's. I get lucky at some 14's.

I can pass every song, and I am about 5' 5". I have seen taller players struggle because the bar is low for them.

i'm about 5'11" (lol punz) and i hate the bar on DDR arcade cabs, they are too low. ITG bars are higher and suit me better. I've passed several 13's on ITG and 1 14 on ITG. On DDR in regards to the DDR X scale, i can pass pretty much up to 16's or so.

I am, as well, 5'11". DDR's Bar feels increadably low, expecially after playing on an ITG cab for a while. I've never noticed a problem with that in direct coralation to my height.

now my weight on the other hand is a different story D:

Hmm......

In my case

I'm 5' 10'' and I can pass (using the SN1-SN2 difficulty scale) up to level 9 songs and I've only cleared only three level 10 songs in my life (mainly Sakura, Max 300 and I forgot the other one).

Though if you ask me:

I'll still don't believe that height is a limiting factor. (when you have games like BM IIDX where you six footers and taller people have to slouch just to see the screen when they play in the arcade)

Just my observation and two cents

height is definitely a factor; there is more weight to move and balance is more difficult

of course, that doesn't mean very tall or very short people can't get good at it, it just means it will require a little more effort to do so

My friend Erik (Cyrus from so. cal) is about 6'5" or so, but he's racked up about a couple hundred AAA's on extreme since he's been playing. Now as far as I know he doesn't play hardly as much any more but i'm sure he was still ridiculously tall when he was AAAing like crazy.

But I can tell he's not comfortable when using the bar.

I'm 5'8" so DDR's bars just feel better to me, but i don't have any problems playing ITG

I'm around 6'2 but only weigh 130 pounds. Doubles is my favorite mode to play, so I guess I'm built for it.

Well someone should stop depending on the bar as much.. I don't feel you should use the bar during an entire song, but only through difficult sections. I feel unimpressed watching people bar rape Max300 and stuff like that >< Though, i get the feeling that bar raping is something the majority of players do, so feeling as the minority, I shouldn't really say anything about it and just let it go.. then again I always play 1x too, so maybe i'm just special.

As for this topic, i'm 5"11 and at least 300lbs. I have no problem playing, if going by the DDR X scale, up to 15s, most harder songs i get too tired to finish. You'll see the whole 200 combo of perfects and marvelouses, then die down to near nothing until i just stop XD

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to tell if it affects me since i can't spontaneously change my height to test your theory ^^; I think its just mind over matter here o.o If you know how to move and balance your body, despite height, you shouldn't have a problem.

I'm around 6'3", 240 lbs. I've gotten single digit greats on all but 2 songs from Extreme. I have no problem using the bar (even though I play most no bar). I have no problem playing doubles. I have no problem sdg'ing PSMO most of the time.

Height can make some things easier or harder, but in the end, it just comes down to overcoming it. Cover up your playing weaknesses by GETTING BETTER, not blaming stuff like your height.

If you've got low stamina, play courses or long songs on ITG. If you've got trouble with foot speed, play with ankle weights, or play 10's, or play 10's with ankle weights (I did 15 greats on max300 wearing 10 lb ankle weights once. that was a fun day lol.). If you have problems turning (SUP ITG) play charts with lots of turns and actually DO the turns.

It really just comes down to self motivation

On a related note, I saw a guy who had to have been 6'11" (his face was even with the top of the speakers while on the pad) playing BIMP on doubles rather skillfully. Quite impressive to watch.

Yeah, I'm 6'5" and 280lbs. and the DDR bar is pretty low for me compared to and ITG bar.

But uh, I can pass some 10s and pretty much anything under that. I don't play a lot, but, yeah.
