that's it | Same here. Difficult isn't difficult, its just standard. I tend to say Oni and not Challenge also.

Here & on DDR Freak, I just refer to Light/Standard/Heavy/Challenge, while talking to offline people or people who aren't that familiar, whatever the game says it is (i.e Extreme, I'll say those; for Supernova, I'll say them). I usually just say the number of the diff. online & add "footer" at the end offline.

that's it | Pretty much the same thing here.
Except I will say "Flashing 10" and sometimes add "Footer" on there.

Since they got rid of the feet in the ratings, I'll usually call it a "level _" on so-and-so difficulty.

I'll say Basic/Difficult/Expert sometimes, but usually only while I'm playing the newer games, which rate them as such. I use Oni rarely.
Numerical values? Either just the number or with "footer" appended. I interchange them frequently. I don't use 'catas' etc. to refer to any of them.
Also, I agree that beginner is a handicap that people don't grow out of. Starting on Light is much better, really. I actually recommend that to new players of the game.

also while some people are trying to learn to call the difficulties by their new names, their new names actually make me want to call them by the original basic/another/maniac names, hahaha

I got into DDR around 99/2000 so when Max came around, I refused to say light/standard/heavy and stuck with basic/another/maniac. But now I just use the new rating system names.

I never see ANYONE get past beginner, and those that do are so damaged by being a 'beginner" that they quit soon after. People got a lot better faster when they didn't have it. | God, agreed. A few of my friends have just been starting to get into DDR, and sometimes I feel like I have to force them not to play on beginner, because they can stay on beginner forever and never get better.
On the other hand, it's good for playing versus with someone who's new. Otherwise you're stuck playing the 5 songs they can do on light.
As for the original question... I tend to use basic/trick/maniac and light/standard/heavy interchangeably. (more often than not I say light, trick and heavy. ) I learned to play on MAX2 AC, but when we went through an arcade drought I played at home with Konamix, so I got used to both. Considering the only thing we have here now is SN, I tend to confuse the friends I mentioned above who are just getting into it, since I never use SN names. Beginner is always beginner, Challenge and Oni get used interchangeably (though I use oni more). Everything is an x footer except 9's which are always catas.
