How are the Ultramix titles?

because they're utter shit compared to Japanese-made mixes?

More specifically, terrible original songs, terrible interfaces, framerate problems, the worst announcers in the series next to DDRX, etc etc etc

Most of the good crossovers have made their way over to other mixes, and most of the commissions suck horribly, so just stick with the Japanese mixes.

I beg to differ.
UM1 was bad, yes. However, its the only way to play Candy <3 with Candy * steps. All the charts were crap.
UM2 was great, lots of good songs from other mixes, lots of good originals, neat remixes, one of the best us only games to date.
UM3 was ok, it had some good songs, horrible remixes (Love this Feelin Zonk Remix....eh.)
UM4 has my favorite song from bemani of all time, Another Planet (Sexy Planet Remix/Reinterpretation) Plus it has a few other gems, but I never accually got this one because i lost my x box.

Definately get 2, maybe 3, maybe 4.

I've played all of them and in all honestly, they're pretty terrible. They all share the same problem of having mediocre interfaces, but the songlists are my real problem. The only one that had a remotely good songlist was 2, and I still didn't enjoy it much. The quest modes aren't any fun to do in 3 and 4, and really, there isn't much more to say. Most of the stuff in the games are licensed/commissioned from people other than Bemani artists, and it really shows.

The haters are PS2 owners, I'm pretty sure.

Ultramix had better graphics, WAY better online play (at the time, you couldn't beat UM3's online system), and had a great selection of songs. You wouldn't have Max 300 (Super-Max-Me-Mix) without UM2.

Also Insaner, a bunch of Midihead stuff, and really good DLC stuff was in the Ultramixes.

My opinion: get them used from Gamestop, try em, see if you like them, and if you don't, then just return them. You have 7 days.

Good luck finding Ultramix 4 though at a Gamestop.

The only thing i can say about the Ultramix series is: Graphix are horrible. Steps are pretty good, but c'mon Konami of Hawaii, even I can do better graphix than this, especially Ultramix's 3 and 4, talk about atrocious. And don't even get me started with the universe series, Total laziness. 3 didnt even have banners, they had graphix cards. Konami Computer Entertainment hawaii needs to stay away from the graphix(and sometimes, steps) departments. let Konami of Japan handle the graphix, seeing as they do the best(As seen in Max, MAX2, Extreme, SuperNOVA1, SuperNOVA2 and X). Besides all this, there's tons of songs in both the Ultramix and the Universe series. Konami should think about putting a good portion of all of it on the next couple of Arcade DDR games. Just revise the graphix and edit most of the stepcharts, and there ya go.

the graphics and frame rate are atrocious

like, 4th mix scrolls better than any of the UMs

most of the exclusive songs are horrible

most of the charts feel like they belong in tournamix 4 or earlier

Universe 3 looked beautiful, had a great song selection, had lyrics (whut up son), and I like the change from banners to CD covers (what they looked like to me, anyway).
