Is there a way to fix the lag? I tried fixing the timing; it wouldn't work.

Here is says mostly that the 60GB has no problems, but the 80 has lots.

You'll just have to get a PS2, or somehow find a 60GB, which you'll have a slim to none chance of finding. Hey, Sony said they had to axe backward compatibility or keep it at $600 bucks. Personally I would go for the latter...

If it works I might just get one.

Will a future firmware update be able to fix it, or there are no hopes at all?

You can not play other region PS2 games on the PS3, that region free only works with blu-ray.

I have an 80 GB PS3 (no PS2), but I recently got SuperNOVA 1 & 2 as gifts... it's driving me nuts being unable to play them. Then reading this post, they'd lag as well... oi...
