So I'm giving a speech about DDR...

For Speech class, we have to give a demonstration speech about something. I was thinking originally IIDX, but I felt I wouldn't have enough time (we have between 1:45 & 3:45 minutes to give our speech) & it'd just be too hard with them, so I figured the next best thing would be DDR. I've decided that I'd bring in my PS2, DDRX, & 2 pads (which I have to borrow) so I can play & another person (someone who isn't good so I can explain why going back into the middle is bad) can join me. My questions are:

- When should I explain the stuff? During, before, or after?

- What would be a good way to explain the new foot rating?

- From these songs, which would be good? I was thinking of either U Can't Touch This, Here It Goes Again, Dance Celebration (System 7 Remix) (to explain 1/16 notes), or trigger (explain BPM changes & stops). Remember, time is a factor, so I wanna stay near 1:30.

Explain BEFORE you play. Your explanation should cover basic mechanics. Don't get into technical stuff like the groove radar and foot ratings.

Instead of playing something cliche, play Wine Red. Better yet, play something other than X if possible. And play on BASIC so people can follow along. Ask your teacher if you're allowed to extend your time so you can play the same song or another song on Expert (and be sure you can actually pass it WELL without making little to no errors). Reason that you want to show a potential intense cardiovascular workout.

Maybe you can play something on Doubles on your second song on Expert as well, if you're allowed to. If you're going to do that, this time ask everyone to watch the step zone so they can see how the arrows match a portion of the music.

I was going to have someone play on either Basic or Beginner while I played on either Difficult or Expert. Perhaps I could bring in Supernova? I was trying to think of songs that people would like & I could easily pass on Expert.

& believe me, Ashura96, during our 1st speech (this is the 4th speech we're giving), a LOT of people were saying fillers ("like", "um", "so", etc.). I'm not one of them.

If I WERE to play 2 songs, I've have only about :30-:45 seconds to explain (2 songs if they were both near 1:30 would be 3 minutes). Thankfully, this is next week, so I still have some time to prepare. I'm finding out today when I'll be giving it (either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday).

Aside from, say, the step zone, how to not stay in the middle, etc., what would be considered "basic" mechanics? I kinda want to go into ratings because I have a feeling people will be wondering "what are those numbers under the song title?"

No need to discuss about any rating discrepancies between songs of the same diff. rating (no need to discuss anything complex that your audience can't understand).

I'd honestly do IIDX instead since everyone knows what DDR is, but not too many Americans/Europeans etc. know what IIDX is, especially since you're only going to have time to cover basic mechanics if you're strained for time.

"Oh hey, it's DDR, we know what that is"

"So basically you stamp on the arrows as the arrows on the screen come up"

"Okay we know that, we see people play all the time"

IIDX:

"Hmm, what's this, looks like a GH ripoff"

"Blah blah 1998 turntable difficult Mei [a] etc."

"Wow, I learned something about a game today"

Which one do you think might give you better credibility/marks...?

Or if you just want to piss people off, do GF and mock GH at every corner just for the laughs.

Still, if you're hell bent on DDR, that's your choice.

I wanted to do IIDX, but I didn't really know if it would work. I wanted someone to participate (though it's not required) & I'm worried that I won't have enough time.

Ya know what? I think I will do IIDX. I'm gonna bring in IIDX Gold, explain that you have to push buttons & turn the turntable when those rectangles come down, & do it. Not to mention it'll be easier on me since I won't have to bring 2 pads & I haven't been feeling all that great lately.

gold is at least cool looking; i think you'll have more luck with gold than with ddr with regards to not getting beat up after class

i would advise keeping your speed mod low and playing an easy and "cool" song like fire fire or second heaven--something catchy that people will enjoy

if you play a second song, or show off a "harder" song i would probably suggest vanessa normal because anything beyond that they just won't understand, haha
