But....I dunno maybe I'm the only one who...enjoyed the flash BG videos, and If I was worried about having a seizure I wouldn't play DDR or Video-Games in general.

Well the characters have been around (except for Max 1, 2, and Extreme) since the first DDR game which was around the time I started playing. So I've had more time to really get to like them and it pissed me off that they were taken away for awhile due to the background videos in DDR MAX. It would almost be like if someone took away the characters from Pop'n Music on the next release and replaced them with small background videos that played on each side of the screen. About 99% of Pop'n fans would be pissed.

I'm also a first-gen player but even in 1st Mix and 2nd Mix, the characters look so bad (it was 1998-1999 era). When did I start liking chracters? Once I've played DDR 3rd mix (graphic upgrade to 30fps), 4th Mix Asian (improvement of Emi's attire, Charmy and addition of Yuni) and especially in 5th Mix (addition of Alice and the addition of a new attire for Emi).

Although it sucked that DDR MAX-EXTREME removed the characters, it wasn't totally bad for me (new BG vids were quite nice...save for some) but it really felt lacking (because it was characters that defined its own trend for DDR). Extreme was worse with its lame graphics, so-so system music and lower-quality BG vids (due to the compression to one single CD) and that made me felt that hopefully....just hopefully, the next version of DDR would put characters BACK ON THE MAP.

Thus, when Supernova 1 came out, I first saw the new attire as well as the new dance moves they've created for Emi and I was like....holy shit, this is one of the best improvements that they've brought in DDR/DS that have wowed me totally!!!

And thus, like Princelandon, I prefer characters as well and we hope that this becomes the norm for DDR/DS game series. With SN 2 on the horizon, it is here to stay and there is hope that this will indeed be pushed even further.

This is why I'm glad that dancing characters are here to stay for future iterations of Supernova.

Wait a minute...I think I just realized something.
Your talking about the random videos that have nothing to do with anything.
I'm talking about specific videos that relate to a song (I.E. B4U, Xepher, Etc.)

I don't dislike the characters at all, I love the majority of the characters...specially Akira ^_^
On the subject of the newer characters being a veteran doesn't necessarily mean I'm not allowed to hate the new models of characters!

Original Characters & Specific BG Videos= I like
New characters & Random Videos= Not so much

Edit: And I don't hate characters, I just really like the flash videos I mentioned in the...paragraph...thing. And the new characters in terms of graphics and uh, dancing "skillz" are alright. Just wish they didn't take that approach with it.

Why not have background videos that actually make a statement about the song in question?

CRAZY TALK!
But yeah, I mean...if that was the case the the songs would have to be a written story..

I am hoping that SuperNOVA2 also has 8 or more new Dancers. Anybody is nice, I would like to see Alice, Akira, Yuni(which she is according to that screen shot) Charmy and Afro(Although he is alot like Disco) anyone else would be cool. But not drum or bass. I dont like them. Not at all....

Does it really matter? The characters on Elite Beat Agents never really matched any of the songs on its' game, and I believe nobody complained that they wanted to turn them off or hope for background videos in the next release. I'm afraid this hate for characters will cause characters in other games to be considered for removal.

Like if Enix decided to make another bust-a-move game. It would be stupid to see a comand prompt bar in the middle of the screen with nothing but a video behind it especially since the game relies on the characters for attacking, dodging, or in Dance Summit's case, so you'll know who your teaming up with. Plus, each character has their own set of high quality mo-cap dance moves, theme song, stage, and personality.

Another example, Space Channel 5. With no characters it would be an invisable Ulala saving invisable hostages from invisable enemies.

The point I'm trying to make here is, I'm afraid DDR is going to leave people under the impression that characters are unimportant in ALL music games which is not true as stated in the examples above. Konami should try to figure out how to make the characters play some kind of importance in a way that doesn't piss people off (I.E. random character-specific stellar master mode mission on Super Nova).

Including the characters in some sort of BG movies would be helpful - just having them dancing on-screen like a goof is just generally annoying. Heck - even the way the characters are presented in Pop'n are a step above how they are presented in SN.

I'm under the idea that the characters should be a side-feature - not thrown in your face by default. I certainly hope they have an option to turn them off in SN2...

You're taking this way out of proportion. Those games you listed are character driven games. Nobody ever said those games shouldn't have characters because the characters are the game. DDR, however, is not character driven, as MAX through Extreme has clearly shown. Personally, if I had to choose between dancers or videos, I would pick videos by a long shot. I'm not saying there's no place for dancers in DDR, but the game doesn't revolve around them. Characters or no, it's still DDR. I'd love to see them incorporated into videos so they're not just doing the same damn thing every song. Using that argument, it's like saying:

Almost like if they took away IIDX videos and replaced them with dancers. Same thing.

I agree. :D I love some of those videos with the dances in them, especially the one with Alice in ever snow, and Emi in Graduation. And how they had that subtle thing with Yuni and Akira chasing after her in like Sweet Sweet Love Magic or whatever it's called. If they had videos, they need more like that where they sorta give 'em a personality. And they need videos with Maid or Devil Zukin in them, cause other than those cards, they don't have... anything, other than maybe .59.

Though playig Secret Rendevous (or however it's really spelled) was always awkward in an arcade... played it once and got an "okayyy..." Soo... some character vids aren't too fun...

I actually prefer the current character method employed in Supernova over the MAX-EXTREME method of just putting BG videos but removing characters.

I say keep the characters

The only thing needed is probably a few more characters (bring back ALICE ) but I can see that Supernova 2 is trying just that.

Hope this continues through out the Supernova series.

My two cents.

The only thing I hate about the character feature in Supernova is removing the Background Image containing the song title.

This leads to confusion on some players... Some of them asks me "what song is that?? "
