About Thread Bumping

I'm wondering, what's the difference between bumping a thread by posting and bumping a thread through purchasing a certain item at the forum shop? I'm really confused about this.

I don't think that the forum shop bump even works. Theoretically though, it would bump the thread to the top without having anyone post in it. Note that if you were to bump a thread by making a post that says "bump" or something equally useless, it would warrant an infraction for spam. At the very least it would piss some people off.

Except you can't make a post that says "bump," because it's one character short of the minimum. Hence why people sometimes say "5char" when they're making posts with pictures/trying to be dickish.

I personally don't bump, myself. I figure that if a thread's dead, it's dead, and the only thing left to do is start a new topic or respond to an existing thread that has a similar subject.
