Default Reducing token whoring and spamming

I think there should be a 24 hour waiting period from your post to receiving your tokens. That gives some time for admins to ban spammers before they can get what they are after. I think that would discourage tokenwhoring and spam.

this idea has been brought up a million times, and we've tried messing around with it, but haven't really found a good way to do it that doesn't screw with everything else on the site. We're always looking into ways to keep the spamming/token whoring down though.

I still say remove tokens entirely.

And I have a lot of them.

Then how do we manage bandwidth consumption from people just coming in, mirroring the Media Shop, and leaving without making a single contribution?

I remember Keith saying sometime back in 6.0 that the site goes through 9TB of bandwidth per month. I'm not sure of what the figures on 7.0 are yet, but I guarantee that it's still very high.

Karma-type system.

Every day you make at least 1 post, you get a point. One point nets you a music download, 2 points nets you a vid.

Productive long-term posters would end up with a large number of points accumulating over time.

However, people who join just when a new IIDX Style comes out or a similar event occurs in order to grab the media aren't able to score much.

Here's a thought:

If someone acts retarded, shut off their token-gaining priviledges until they do one of two things- either are approved as a good member again (and no, leaving forever doesn't count, although it'd be appreciated), or they donate to the site to prove they do want a change (or at least to get that media real bad.)

This possible? I'm unaware of how the code works on the tokens.

I don't have much experience with the token system from an adminstrative standpoint, but I am going to go ahead and say that chances are it IS possible to turn off an individual user's token earning priviliges, since vBulletin is PACKED with admin features.

And when I say PACKED, I mean WELL OVER THE $160's worth.

If that does work, an add-on idea that may not be as brilliant as it sounds at 2 AM to my sleep addled brain:

Place a nice, large announcement in whatever forum(s?) it's deemed necessary marked "If you are not gaining tokens, click here" to explain this to people. Ban anyone who proceeds to make a "where my tokens at?!?!?!?!" thread.

I would probably just issue an infraction for that. Banning seems quite steep for not reading a thread.

How about it just becomes a rule that the person have a PM sent to them (maybe someone can write a script to do it automatically) that will tell them that they have temporarily lost token-earning priviliges, explain why it happened, and what will happen from that point on.

And if I'm remembering the AdminCP correctly, I'm pretty damn sure that you can individually turn off postcounts, so why not tokens?
