I have been observing this site, but for some reason, certain bots and users are not listed in the Ban Log, even if they were perma-banned. What's going on?

If they're infraction-banned they don't appear in the banlog and, eventually, their accounts go active again, which is why Elixir (for example) came back. The idea is that hopefully they'll have learned a lesson and won't shit up the forums again. In the case of spammers it doesn't matter, since they'll just abandon the account.

Spambots are scripts that either advertise, or post a lot of the same thing over and over again.

Yeah, but some also come and make multiple accounts, which is banned by the IP, eitherway the scripts are just used to promote other sites which have viruses, or are porn related, or something that will harm your computer. In any case, vBulletin forums have such things as spam protections, like for registering where you have to type words or use a sentence, etc etc. But some scripts get by that, or a person uses it to get by, then lets the script do whatever. It kinda ruins the site, but one thing we do on our site is if the member is a new member, they start with 0 posts, if their first post contains any words or links or anything spam wise, it just goes into moderation first, so no-one sees it. I have to say it is the best thing, because no-one sees the spam except for us admin, and we can ban and delete the problem with no harm to anyone for our site =)

we have that set up here too; however sometimes the posts just manage to get by. also, the spamfilter blocks legitimate posts sometimes, which isn't a huge deal. anyways, nothing is perfect, so some of the spam is going to get by, and there really isn't anything that can be done about it, haha
