Default A couple of KBM questions

So keyboardmania controllers are pretty rare and therefore pretty expensive (especially importing to the uk) so I've got a couple of questions.

I hear it's possible to use a usb keyboard (typing style not music style) as a controller is this true?
If so does it work on both mixes of the game? I hear only 2nd/3rd works with usb
Also has anyone ever made a homemade kbm controllers. Possibly by taking a usb typing keyboard and a cheap music keyboard and connecting the music keyboards contacts to the typing keyboards
Are there any cheap alternatives to the official controller, such as any 3rd party keyboards

I'm almost sure that a USB typing keyboard wont work with the PS2 mixes, I haven't tried it myself. And the Yamaha one only works with KBM II, only the official keyboard works with the first game.
