I have all 5 now games now (V, MPS, V2, MPG, V3) and I still yet have to unlock most songs since I don't have enough time to play. But I would start with V because it does have the most fun songs even if the interface is kinda bad to some people. If you want, just get them all.

I played a little GFDM 3rd/2nd before I put the game in. The interface was like "WHOA!" and I had to get used to playing with that interface, which didn't take long for me to start getting used to---like the Song Select Screen Options, Number Difficulty, etc....nice cogs. XD
Anyways, this game puts you in your place, ROFL! I tried my luck with The Least 100sec., MODEL DD3, and under control and got PWNED on Basic (GF). XD Still don't use High Speed though...it's too fast, but I CAN handle x1.5 speed, which is all I need to take out some of the crazy stuff.
Really hard stuff, lol, but I know I'm close to passing under control (Basic) though. =P
As for the music selection, I think it's pretty decent/mixed bag because there are a few awesome songs, a few good songs, some mediocre songs, and a few bland songs. I must say that most of the songs' charts are fun; Wailing Bonuses are placed in such fun positions, lol.
The GFDM V unlock system is nice (thick, lol) and fast + it gets the job done. =)
My only gripe about GFDM V is the sound quality. While most of the licensed songs have excellent sound quality, alot of everything else doesn't seem high enough in sound quality, infact, some songs I've played sounded pretty low and unclear....I surely hope that the later games have higher sound quality. I have a surround sound speaker system w/subwoofer and still, I'd have to raise even moreso than the GF (PSX) games to try to get better sound quality for GFDM V. In my options menu, I have everything set up to the highest for volume...and still, same quality.
Other than that, I'm enjoying the game and I have some more songs to unlock. My copy of GFDM 4th/3rd should be in sometime next week or a bit later, so I'll have V as my newest for now. =)

And a tip for the unlock system that you may have seen me give before. The white text on the last roulette negates your points, but if you press the stop button while that text is visible you NEVER land on it.

Well, my GFDM 4th/3rd has finally arrived and I played the heck out of it. I must say that it is a large improvement over the previous mixes in both graphics and music quality! I was stunned to see such eye candy; the music/mode select screens are so much cooler now. I've played a GuitarFreaks 4thMIX machine before, but I totally forgot everything about it because I only played it a couple of times back in 2003 at some arcade in Michigan or Ohio (think it was Pinball Pete's).
Anyways, the music is sooo good on GFDM 4th/3rd! I seriously can't get enough of these awesome songs, especially MARIONETTE. I unlocked Day Dream pretty fast and failed it just as fast lol. This game has a polished feel and it looks sparkling beautiful IMO. =)
Sound quality of the game is great, especially for Right On Time. I really don't understand how the older games (including PS1 GF) have overall higher sound quality than GFDM V. =/
I surely hope that the sound quality is improved for the GFDM MPS, GFDM MPG, GFDM V2, and GFDM V3. So far, the only music games with the highest sound quality that I know of are pop'n music and DDR series.
Anyways, I've ordered some more stuff today:
1. New (no stand) Drummania Controller
2. GuitarFreaks & Drummania MASTERPIECE SILVER
3. GuitarFreaks & Drummania MASTERPIECE GOLD
....and for when I want to take a break:
4. Tales of Destiny (PS2 remake)
...with all of this, all I'd need is GFDM V2 and GFDM V3. Typically, I would have continued to purchase the game in order by release, but since GFDM MPG was for cheaper at Play-Asia, I went ahead and got it instead of GFDM V2 this time.
Also concerning GFDM V, I have all songs unlocked except for BreakDown (GFDM-style) and Homesick Pt.2&3. I read on a FAQ that it takes 30 hours and 30 minutes to unlock both of these, ROFL. The thing is, I didn't turn off the GITADO SLOT yet and I've been playing the game still collecting points via the slot; I have nearly 200000 Points now.......if I turn it off, will the time release BEGIN from 00:00 or have the programmers been generous by keeping count even with the time release off? 30+ hours is insane, lol...that's over 3 times worse than time unlocking pop'n music 10! XD
Since I'm getting GFDM MPS, I'm wondering if the Roulette would take as long as the Time Release...

MPS is just a pain the only thing you can do it play with dark mode and get extra stage every time to even consider an unlock

It's not like you can't just play them in their respective games anyway, so it's not a huge loss...though I really do like Homesick.

Let's take each song is about 2 minutes (MAX, most songs are about 1:30-2:00, unless you want long versions, which are about 3:30), 30-40 songs for one hour...which means you're looking at playing about 600-800 songs if you want to unlock everything.
That's just ridiculous.
Granted, there's a good amount of stuff to unlock, but the roulette is just silly. Time Release takes WAY too much time, to the point where you might as well just spend the time to unlock stuff through roulette, IMO.
