Default GF Controller Compatibility

I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but I was unable to find an answer. Are guitar hero controllers compatible with guitar freaks?

half yes, half no

you have to mod the controllers to work with guitar freaks, but then it still doesn't work with every mix...

so, there's no real compatibility!

Not exactly. GH controllers will work with Guitar Freaks in V2, MPS, MPG, and probably V3 when it comes out. You can configure the button setup in those games to make it so you use the 3 middle buttons.

However, GH controllers are always holding down the left button on the controller. This is how GH knows a GH controller is inserted. So, you'll need to have a dualshock in for setting your mods, picking your song, and once you press start, swap the dualshock for the GH controller. It's kind of annoying, but still worth it if that's all you have.

Don't bother, the pick is no good for Guitar Freaks style picking, at least thats what I found. It could not stand up to even medium speed double picking songs, and forget something like Over There or DD4.

The original GH controller's pick has a tendency to pick itself back up when you pick down... so you'll get tons of random misses unless you firmly hold the pick.

Some third party controllers have improved picks - I have the shredder and find it works fairly well.

iwell its because the pick register as D-Pad up on both directions and since in gf its a separate up/down on the d-pad for pick, all the hyper picking is impossible (model DD songs, over there, tl100s...)

It depends on how good he is at the game then. It works fine for mid 40s-50s stuff for me. I'm mostly a DM player, but decided to try some GF on a GH controller while trying to finish MPG unlocks when it was too late to drum without waking people.

So, if you don't know how much you like GF, or aren't that great, it works pretty well. If you're already very skilled, listen to Checky.

I have an unmodded GH2 controller, and it works fine with MPS and MPG as far as I can tell. I've never played on anything else, so I don't know if it's hampering me in the upper levels, but I can do stuff in the 50s and 60s just fine with it (I don't play much GF at all; mostly DM). Oddly, V2 doesn't seem to register properly when I double pick; when I pick back and forth rapidly, it just doesn't register most of the notes and I get big chunks of misses, which makes the game unplayable. Is there any way to fix that without modding the controller? (I just use a regular controller to navigate the menus; this works fine for MPS and MPG, it's V2 and only V2 that gives me problems with this, disregarding V, which doesn't work at all for obvious reasons.)
