Default which GFDM should I nab first?

alright, I've figured out that guitar freaks is going to be the first or second bemani game I start collecting, I've never played it before, but DO have pretty good guitar hero skills, and understand the basics of the game.
so, which mix (ps2) should I grab first?
I'm thinking of getting masterpiece gold/silver or maybe V3 first.

Silver then V3....
Apparantly, Gold has a very weird way to registering "perfects", so I would say that is the last one you get

i would pick up gfdm gold. its got alot of great songs on there like dragon blade concertino and great covers like taisetsu na mono and monster tree. ive only got masterpiece silver and gold. gold has the easier more"DDRISH" interface and masterpiece silver has a more "seperated" feel, as in they seperate guitar and drums, which is not a bad thing but if you want to switch back and forth it can be a pain.
songselection is pretty much your own opnion. silver has asaki and beforu stuff which i like. but gold (also having beforu and asaki just not as much) has alot of other unique songs like smile for you and yellow panic time.
my personal opnion is to get gold. but really its up to you

V2. And play it for at least a month before getting anything else.

You'll notice that the songs skew towards slow and poppy. Not a whole lot that's really hard-edged, and, other than the obligatory Mutsuhiko Izumi barn burner (Fairy Tales), not a lot that's blisteringly hard. Not a whole lot that's reached "played to death" status, either (definitely not on the order of Tentaikansoku, Monster Tree, or Sobakasu Freckles, much less Dragon Blade).

That's why you should start with V2: because you have to get used to this. This is what Gitadora is about, not ultra-hard notecharts (which are EXTREMELY sparse compared to IIDX or PoMu), not rebelliousness, not testosterone-soaked rage, and absolutely not the fanatical rock-rock-rock consciousness permeating every atom of Guitar Hero. It's guitar and drum music, and that includes swing, big beat, jazz (oh, the jazz), punk, emo, speed metal, and more fluffy J-pop than you thought possible.

Don't sweat difficulty. It's a nice, smooth progression and always has been. It's all about the music. Learn to appreciate what's in V2 or be doomed to play the same 3-4 songs in every Mix (like most of the players I've seen), i'ts that simple.

(As for all the videos that take place at a beach or ocean, pay it no mind. My understanding was that it was a one-time thing.)

well that's essentially why I quit guitar hero.
harmonix handed it over to activision and now it's just been a complete mess of a game with blatantly obvious over-charting.

Gold has more Asaki, actually.

Anyway, I'd recommend Gold. I think it's best to learn the classics first, then eventually moving on to the newer songs.

I started w/ Silver, then got Gold & then V3. I'd say Gold since the interface is more friendly, but V3 seemed easier to me (it could be I just got better). However, I think DKW makes a good point.

Gold is a very hard game to play, as many of the charts are pretty difficult. I say start with something off base, like V, V2, or V3. I personally enjoy V, and V3 the most.

Buy every game. It's the only way to experience it.. I have trouble playing on Cs because I only have a couple games and I'm always like.. where are all my songs ... If I had to pick one though... I'd pick V3.

note that the title is "which one should I nab first"
I'm going to get them all eventually, just wanted people's opinions on which one I should get first, I'll probably get V2 like DKM suggested so I don't get into the habit of playing the really popular songs over and over and over...

and yeah, DKM, I have a wide taste in music, I'm not a COMPLETE metal-head, I like metal, yes, but I'm still into trance, j-pop, j-rock, some jazz, etc.
it's just guitar hero was the first music game I really got involved in and it just so happened that it was a complete metal-fest.

I know you stated you're looking for the PS2 titles...

But if possible, try and start out with Guitar Freaks 1. On PlayStation 1.

That's right, the original.

Yes it's outdated, hardly has any songs (compared to newer mixes), and all the music is cheap synth (compared to what you hear in newer mixes), but that's why it's a good one to start off with.

You're not overwhelmed by the presence of +50 or so tracks (which is what the PS2 ones offer) and with the small selection, it's easy to hone in on the various styles the game offers and train for the later games.

All the basic genres of music are in there and there are no lyrics to any of the songs so you can just focus clearly on the instrumentation.

And in all honesty... if you've never played "Cool Joe," you've never played Guitar Freaks.

would swap magic get rid of the region protection for PSX games?...
because I believe it only works with ps2 games...

EDIT: this makes me even more inclined to grab a memor32 card...

I wrote a response to this early but I guess I didnt post it.

Someone asked a question related to your PSX question not too long ago on this board. You can probably find your answer in the thread, here.

Anyway what I think:
The V series is a better route to go if you're just starting out. They seem to cover a wide variety of songs and difficulties because they were also released in the arcade, so the songlists are ideal for beginners. All of them have excellent soundtracks too. Personally, I would say V3 is a great choice as well as V2. Masterpiece releases would be good as a second or third buy.

Man, nostalgia, I remember FCing Cool joe for the first time. That was so epic back then.
