Default Questions/Thoughts Relating to GF V5

To my utter surprise, the arcade I used to play in the city just today updated its V4 to V5. And I thought wow this is quick... I'd never expected Melbourne to have V5 this early o_O

Alright, well when I set my PSM, I see no LIGHT mode anywhere in the lists. It's seem that it has been replaced with AUTO (Neck/Pick). SO is there any way of enabling LIGHT mode or it's just gone forever? I tried the old "2R 3G 2B pick" method that triggers LIGHT (up to V2 I think) but it doesn't work... So is it REALLY gone?

I think that the AUTO (Neck/Pick) is (a bit too) useless. I've used it a few times to practice my picking but since the frets hit themselves automatically, you don't really know whether you actually nail the notes or not. I didn't bother trying the AUTO Pick since it would be dumb to do.... But I think it can be a good way to practice my fingering.

I really don't know what to think of this V5. On a good side, now I can enjoy the most updated version with quite a bit of new songs but on the other hand, the LIGHT mode which used to help me A LOT is now gone. I felt that now I'm either forced to play with Normal (which basically eliminates every other songs I'm not familiar with) or cheat out with the supposed to be "helpful" feature of AUTO whatever... And plus I've heard that they've done this so the game can be more noob-friendly but I don't think it is that completely. Even with AUTO Neck on, mindless picking would kill you in a second without LIGHT (Now that I mention it, AUTO neck + LIGHT = just don't even bother to play lol). I think this is a very bad move.

As for today, I have only played "Mayday" since that's the only songs I like from the new song list. The rest seems meh but I'll try them out... Any suggestions on some great tracks that V5 has?

It's good they got rid of Light mode. Maybe now you won't be relying on a crutch, and you will most likely improve faster now.

I have noticed with GF&DM and basically all of Bemani, don't judge a song based on its preview sample.

Don't misunderstand my point. I don't take pride in passing a song with LIGHT on anymore. I, too, feel that it's cheap. BUT, LIGHT mode is a good way to familiarise yourself with the songs you don't usually play/are about to play. After I know how the rhythm goes, I'd play that song again with no light and strife on it. You can't rely on the difficulty rating to pick which songs you want to play. It's the songs that you are not familiar with is, no matter what difficulty they are in, that are going to kill you. And like I said in my other thread, failing songs costs money. Of course I know I should play the songs I'm not familiar with on the last try but it takes a long time(and money) to know them well. LIGHT serves as a trial & error phase - it lets you know which songs you can/cannot tackle yet so you don't waste your credit in the end. I can't trial these songs anywhere else, because I don't have the guitar controller and the game. I can preview some of these songs using DTX but I can only play pretend...

SO yeah, in that respect it's a bad move.

To be honest you could play normal in battle mode to familiarize with the song.

Agreed. Light mode, BeForU, and Asaki were the three reasons why I restarted playing GF & DM a few years ago. If Bemani doesn't bring back Light in GF V6, then V5 would probably be the last GF that I play.

For recommendation and forum member selections of new songs in V5, please see this thread :)

I could have sworn Light used to be in the Judgement tab. Its like Judgement >> Light > Normal > Hazard. I don't know I haven't paid attention to it yet. I'll check it out later this afternoon.

Don't play Light, that's not the way to improve. I don't know if you understand, but LIGHT completely changes the dynamic of playing GF. Most people think, "Oh, it just makes your life bar go down slower". But you know what? It goes down slower because you don't get misses for hitting the pick at the wrong time, it still actually goes down the same amount for just plain missing a note. Now, does hitting notes at the wrong time constitute learning? Absolutely not. Playing LIGHT allows you to spam the shit out of the pick and get credit for randomly hitting notes you otherwise would have missed. If your having trouble, play level 17 basic songs or whatever. You have to be able to pick the notes at the right time otherwise your never going to improve. Pick Spamming =/= Improving. GG

^Like I said in my previous post (did you read my second one on this thread?) that I don't take pride in passing with LIGHT anymore. LIGHT makes it easier for me to preview harder songs. After I know the beats, I'd play them again, light OFF. It's kind of bad it's gone but then again it's not that I'm completely obliterated by this. I think it even has its own benefit now that no LIGHT discourages almost everyone who plays GF in my arcade, I get to hog the guitar for longer period (not that anyone ever plays them anyways rofl)

Tip-Time with Checky:

1) Play the fastest scroll rate possible. This spaces out the notes so you can see them better. Under the advice of a friend I jumped straight from 3x to 7x. I did terrible for about a week, but after that I got a lot better very quickly (from 40's to 90's in 2 weeks).

2) Use position-B, on GF this moves the perfect gauge to the middle of the screen, allowing you to see the notes better.

3) Use random always. Unlike other games like Pop-n and IIDX where random can create difficult patterns that make it counter-intuitive for learning, due to the nature of GF's 3 keys it creates patterns of the same difficulty, while at the same time you won't rely on memory of patterns and will get very good at sightreading, making it less daunting trying new songs. Anyone can S a song if they play the same chart 50 times, random just makes you better period. I remember playing Children's Sketchbook about 10 times on the regular chart before finally passing it. First time I played random I failed, just beacuse the chart was a little bit different, I wasn't actually reading the notes, I was remembering them.

4) Play songs you have never played before, this is a big one. If you play the same 15-20 songs all the time because you like them or know them you won't get better, that's what I used to do and why I was stuck at level 40 =_="..

5) Play auto-pick

No, really... do it, but pick anyway. Then, auto-neck and play normally. Quick and dirty way to figure out which parts are making you fail certain songs

If you're "afraid" of playing new songs....
check it out before you start playing I guess?
GuitarFreaks PAGER -PLUS-
I used light under the influence of others.
Hopefully under the new version, everybody improves faster.
Cheers
