Default Why isn't 5x speed uh.... 5x harder?

So I was playing my new favorite song (Yum Yum Orange or something) on V2 which I like because a good amount of finger switching, and I accidently left it on 5x. I thought I was going to get my ass handed to me, when the switching part... wasn't significantly more difficult.

And I've also read people up the speed on difficult songs because it "spaces out" the notes and they are easier to read, and It also reminded me how some songs on 1x look like a giant stack of notes to me.

So I thought a thread about this would be a good idea. Do you guys agree that 2x and 3x is at times more easy than the original speed? And as far as the speed you play the notes, is it really 5x faster? It seems like they just space them out, and you get to see 5 times less on the screen at once, forcing you to "read faster."

It feels like I am playing at the same speed - the song's speed doesn't change, so unless they are sneaking in 5x more notes,

But what are you thoughts on altering the speed? Does it make you a better player? Is it more easy than the original? I think it's fun just altering the speed and changing the song experience. People that can play a song in teh 50 difficulty and higher at 5x and 6x speed impress the hell out of me.

Oddly I thought I saw this question before.

Some friends of mine say that they have pretty horrible reaction speed thus they play at 1x-1.5x. Yeah, they can react better at that speed, but how do you actually gauge like say... the speed of over there hyperpick? It's a huge lump of notes stickied together.

Yes, 5x = 5 times the scrolling speed as compared to 1x.

To me, I think altering to a higher speed is better, however there's a certain limit as to how fast you can see. e.g If 6x results in a lousy performance, go back to 5x or 5.5x. There are some pros out there who play at 7x or even 8x I've heard, but that requires an insane amount of eye power. I tried that and I saw flying spaceships running around after that.

Being said and all, I just have to say one thing, stick to whatever speed you are most comfortable with. Nothing lower than 3x is pretty ok since most of the notes are pretty spaced out already.

(FYI, I'm playing 4x-4.5x. And I'm doing pretty fine. 5x only for the insanely fast songs like Funky Sonic World where I cant quite see the notes properly since they are all scrunched up.)

Well, eventually you will be comfortable with all speeds up to human (meaning, you must "level up" to tatsujin if you want to play past 7x), but I really wonder how to gauge how you are playing (does 1x mean it takes more skill, or does 5x mean you're playing the harder version?). Something tells me that sometimes, being able to play a song on 1x, is just as much of an accomplishment as it is on 3x or 5x or whatever.

*and I did search "game speed" to see if this thread was made before, but I did not get any results for that search.*

Sure playing on 1x is easier to see the notes, but if you can't time it then whats the point.. Spacing it out for me just makes it easier to raise my perfects. Before, playing on 5x, my Perfect Accuracy was decent, but now on
7x, it's just gotten even better. Most top rankers I believe play between 7.5-8.5. BUSTAMAX I know plays 8x. I've tried 8x, but on some songs it's just not comfortable for me to read. So yes, raising the speed up to a point may make it harder to read, but it will drastically inscrease your Perfect Accuracy.

As a test, I played AgnusDei on 1x, a song I can normally excellent. I got 10 greats and a few misses on it, yay.

personally i can react faster than i can read the garbled bunch of notes at 1x or hell even 2x is a challenge for me
in GF 5x looks just right i can 5.5x some songs if the spacing is necessary
in DM 5 is too fast for some reason i have to go at it at about 4 or 4.5
i think if you can excellent a song on any speed level its an accomplishment im glad they have moved to increments because 1st-3rd are hard to play since all you get it either fast flow(3x) or super fast flow(6x) i should just man up and train to get comfy with 6x

I never even thought of playing on 5x speed, I thought it would kill me. Now I see it probably won't.

Personally I change the speed mods depeding on the difficulty of the song I'm playing. When I'm playing something easy like Break Down I play 1.5x. As the difficulty of the song increases so does my speed mod, but I never go above 3x. And I only use that for the hardest of songs like Concertino in Blue. Maybe if I use 5x, or 4x I'll be able to beat that song.

Depends on the game, for me... My reaction only allows 4x maximum on drummania - which is pretty decent, but a full 7x (or whatever's MAX these days) on GF without an incredibly great loss of performance. But then, I've whored GF since the start and DM not so much, so--

High speeds make most songs easier in every bemani game. Since in GF/DM all songs have the same scroll speed, you can just use whichever you're most comfortable with. I use 6x for GF, and I consider myself pretty decent at it (hardest song I've passed is a 74.). When I play controller DM (no DM controller...) I only go up to 3.5x.

This is a bit off-topic, but is it just me, or does DM have the hardest to read notes in all of bemani? The note colors practically blend in with the backgrounds.

I have a harder time reading the notes on GF than on DM, to be honest. I used to play GF with Dark all the time to make the notes easier to see, it was so bad for me.

Heh, when I first started playing GF I used to see people in the arcades playing at absurdly high speeds and thinking 'how in the world?'

Nowadays I can't survive without my speed boost! Sometimes I forget to turn it on in the arcade and my scores suffer dramatically...

6x is my comfort zone. I've tried higher and can sort of survive, but it's more difficult for me to read.

I think DDR has the hardest notes to read, because I'm positive when the background is all flashy the red notes blend in with the background music video.

But GF and DM notes are really easy to read, just hitting them that's the thing.

I play on a steady 5x-6.5x speed on GF and I've done like lv 84 songs

My speed on DM is usually 3-3.5x but I'm not that good at DM.

Its a preference thing

1x speed gives you more time to react to the upcoming notes but it becomes very difficult to process so many notes placed so close to each other. Also slow speeds tend to cause more anticipation which would cause you to hit too soon.

If the scroll rate was too fast you wouldnt have enough time to react to it and hit the note at the right time.

For me I find DM is best at 4.5x speed and GF at 6.0 speed. GF can be faster because there are only 3 lanes to pay attention to, as compared to 6 on DM.

Strange. I'm getting pretty comfortable with 5x speed at the moment, and for the most part (minus a few songs that have really fast sections - my fingers can't move that fast yet!), I can play all the songs I'm able to at 1x, also at 5x.

Since I'm still learning the game (can barely do any lvl 50 songs), playing at 5x and forcing myself to learn to read the notes faster and faster is a good thing, but I reckon afterwards, I should train myself to complete songs at 1x as well.

Some songs are more difficult at 1x speed, correct?

I think it's interesting and something you wouldn't notice right away.

Orignal z said: Heh, when I first started playing GF I used to see people in the arcades playing at absurdly high speeds and thinking 'how in the world?'

Hahaha. Me too! And now I kind of think/understand it's probably making the song easier for them - or at least not too much harder! Songs at 5x speed seem SO simplified.

All songs are more difficult for me at 1x =] And whichever speed you get most comfortable at, just stick there. It's your best chance for improvement.
