But should you get a PS3, get one with PS2 backwards compatibility, as the system no longer supports that (I think the 40 GB models are the first without it?).
This way you can still play the PS2 releases, in the event they don't release a compilation that contains every single GF and DM song ever on one blu-ray disc.
An unlikely fantasy, yes. But come on, you've all thought of it.

An unlikely fantasy, yes. But come on, you've all thought of it. | As defiled said, newer/cheap PS3 models will not have any backwards compatibility, and as far as I remember even with the 'premium' systems that offer backwards compatibility, some PS2 games will not run well/will not run at all on PS3.
The series is likely not going to PS3/next-gen at all anytime soon. There is no reason to graphically, they would not release a version with all or even most of the songs in the series on it (revivals are spread out over time so people buy all versions and Konami makes more money), and additionally none of the peripherals would work on it. Konami would have to release new wireless Guitar Freaks KOCs and ASCs as well as DrumMania KOCs, although the DTX models might be fine if they were supported by the game.
PS3 Bemani on PS3's issue has always been "the peripherals will not work at all". If you want to play GF/DM, or any other Bemani, my advice would be sticking to PS2.

I only have a US PS3 so I couldn't test all my other Bemani, but I had Beatmania US running with my KOC hooked up via the Pelican adapter. It lagged enough to make it pretty much unplayable.

An unlikely fantasy, yes. But come on, you've all thought of it. | Yes, and countless newbies keep suggesting that for IIDX, and we keep telling them why it's never going to happen.

20gb/60gb = First batch, Emotion Engine (PS2 Chip) installed which is the best backwards compatibility you can get. (Apparently the PAL 60gb PS3 is using software emulation though, but US ones use the emotion engine.)
80gb = Second batch, using software emulation to emulate. Some games may work, some may not.
40gb = Third batch, no PS2 emulation at all, and it can only emulate PS1 games through software emulation.
I suggest the first batch, as they have the best backwards compatibility of all the PS3 batches. The first batch, however, is not in production anymore, so it will be harder to find than the others. It can still be found occasionally in a store and online though, of course.

As people have said, the series will go PS3 eventually, but not any time soon. There's no real benefit to doing it in technical terms, so Konami will simply switch over whenever they feel they'll sell more copies on PS3 than PS2. Which, given the sales of the PS3, won't be for a while.

IMHO bemani + ps3 = no. There are currently zillions of PS2 units in Japan/worldwide, so there's plenty of market for games on that system. Releases on PS3, as mentioned by pretty much everyone, would require totally new controllers. They're still backordered on ASCs -- what makes you think that they'd be willing to make new KOCs? :p

therefore NO NEED TO CHIP IT!!!! (unless i want to download 10 gig+ games and rape my bandwidth...)

honestly if you're buying a system purely to play bemani in next-gen I would hold off and see. I really don't see a guarantee that it will continue on ps3 as opposed to 360 if sony doesn't start selling more consoles. not to start a console war or anything, but until there's any announcement pointing towards ps3 there's no guarantee at all.

Japanese people don't buy XBoxes. the sales figures are laughable.

Considering as Brazo said that there is no technical advantage to moving bemani to the PS3, it would be a very safe assumption that Bemani will continue to live on the PS2 and stay there until its death.
The only advantage I could see to moving bemani to the PS3 would be to have bemani in 1080p and to have higher quality sound files, but at what point is enough enough?
