first thing, right place.
Info you need:
1. BPM of song
2. MP3, OGG, or WAV of song
How to get StepMania to recognize the song:
1. Open up notepad (assuming you use Windows)
2. Copy this into there and add wanted information between the ':' and the ';' (you MUST fill in BPM, TITLE, and MUSIC). When typing in music be sure to include the file type (e.g. yeahsongname.mp3). The BPM has 2 numbers, one to represent the beat number and another to represent the BPM. I have already put in the beat number here. Everything else is pretty self explanatory:
#TITLE:;
#SUBTITLE:;
#ARTIST:;
#TITLETRANSLIT:;
#SUBTITLETRANSLIT:;
#ARTISTTRANSLIT:;
#GENRE:;
#CREDIT:;
#BANNER:;
#BACKGROUND:;
#LYRICSPATH:;
#CDTITLE:;
#MUSIC:;
#OFFSET:0.000;
#SAMPLESTART:;
#SAMPLELENGTH:;
#SELECTABLE:YES;
#BPMS:0.000=;
3. Go to File -> Save As. Choose 'All filetypes' and type in the song name + '.sm'.
4. Go into the StepMania\Songs folder. Make a new folder here and name it like 'originals' or whatever. If you already have a folder that you want the song to go in then you don't need to do that. Now go into the folder you may or may not have just created. Make a new folder and name it the same thing as the SM file. Put the SM file and the mp3/ogg/wav into this folder.
5. Start up StepMania, go into Edit/Synch Songs and find your song, choose the difficulty to be made, and press start (whatever key you have set to it).
Setting the Offset:
1. In the StepMania Editor, place quarter notes for a few measures and press F4 and then CTRL + P. This will play all of the steps and tick when they come. If the steps are behind the beat then decrease the offset (F11). If the steps are ahead of the beat then increase the offset (F12).
Actually stepping the song:
1. Don't put in BS notes.
2. Try not to make the whole thing double steps unless thats what you want to do. Many people don't like lots of double stepping.
3. Make several difficulties to make more people of different skill levels enjoy the song.
4. If the song merits a freeze (BPM stop), then add one using F9 (-) and F10 (+).
5. Likewise, if the song slows down or speeds up, then change the BPM accordingly using F7 (-) and F8 (+)
Use ALT when change BPM/Offset/whatever to increase or decrease smaller increments.
- Press ENTER for some step options.
- Press F1 for all Hotkeys
- Press Escape more more options (Player/Song options, Save, Exit)
Be sure to SAVE often. If you accidently close StepMania or exit the editor, all unsaved work will be gone.
