Marketplace Rating: 0 | Final Fantasy 1 has a special place in my heart, because it was the first RPG I was able to finish completely (yeah, I even beat that War Machine from the Sky temple).
But Final Fantasy VI is still the BEST of the series. There are a lot of reasons, but some of the most important are:
-10 characters with independant development. None of them is more important than other, all of them have an equally important role in the entire game.
-The stories are actually TRAGIC, not some kind of teen-angst fanfiction *remembers the death of Cyan's family*
-Overall, the game reached visual, artistic and narrative levels you wouldn't expect in a 16 bit game. The game was epic all the time.
-The esper system was easy to manage. You didn't need to spend HOURS to learn just 1 spell.
-Gameplay wise, each character was different, with different subsystems (swordtech, blitz, rage, etc.).
-2 charismatic extra characters
-Etc.

Final Fantasy VI has been, and probably always will be, my favorite. The memories I have of playing it are some of my best, and the game itself is just so beautifully polished for its time. It was mindblowingly beautiful for a 16-bit generation title.
The musical score is also one of my favorites - I think it's some of Uematsu's greatest work. If they successfully revamped the game with a rebuilt score and graphics that reeked of Amano, I couldn't ask for anything more in a video game.

I remember staying up all night playing it the first night. Now that I've played virtually every FF game, I'd say VI, VII, and IX are my favorites.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | hmm, I played FFVI recently and loved every second of it, when I first played FFVII, I loved it, but now I can't play it because the controls feel horrible, and I still like FFX a lot ;/. FFVIII was a bad game imo, and FFIX just never did it.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | The only sin that game had: It has the name "Final Fantasy" on its title.
It's great as a game, with all those subquests and the card game... but it's terrible as a Final Fantasy.
<- Considers FF VII a highly overrated game.
