Ugh, I've had it with my teacher.

Be prepared for a rant. A long one. A very, very long one. Ugh. This guy has been driving me bonkers since day one, and I've just about HAD IT with him.

I go to art school. Usually I have teachers who give tough critiques, but this one teacher in particular... oi. If I could, I'd gladly do several things to him I'd rather not mention on a forum (many of them being just gory and violent), he's just annoyed me so much.

Last semester I had him, and we only did 3 projects the entire semester. I wasn't the top student in his class, but he always liked what I did when I handed it in. During the process of making everything however... for one project in particular, let's just say that he flat-out called me a slacker and that I put off my work. In front of the entire class, during a critique. And he was at the point of yelling at me and calling my work total crap. X_x Granted, I had forgotten that day that we were going to be doing a mid-progress review, and I hadn't really done anything big yet, plus I had changed my idea. So I did deserve to be scolded. However, I don't think I needed to be humiliated in front of the entire class like that. Saying something like "You've got to be kidding. That's all you've done? We're in the middle of the project, and you changed your idea? You pushed it off, didn't you? Slacker. Waited till the last minute. What the **** were you thinking?" doesn't exactly encourage me to do work. It sent me into a spiraling slump. I couldn't touch my sketchbook for at least a week, I was so depressed and so humiliated. X_x I could barely focus on my art homework as well. His words would come ringing back to my ears as soon as I touched a pencil.

Then, the final project came for last semester. We had another mid-progress review. My teacher looked at my work, and then proceeded to tell the entire class that I had only put 60% of my effort into anything I did during that semester, and then he looked at me and gave me this challenge. "So, are you gonna put your full effort this time?" This caused the other students to giggle and make snide remarks. I was humiliated again. I kept looking at the floor. However, at the end of the semester he ended up loving my final project, and calling it my best work.

This semester, I had him again. I thought since now we're doing 2 week projects, things would be looking better for me. Hahahahaha. NOT.

Within the first week of sketches due, I came down with a fever and couldn't go to class. I sent the sketches of what I had to him via email, and he wrote back to me, saying for me to just pick one and bring it in. The next week, I do so. What does he say when he sees it?

"Who did this one?"
"Me."
"Really? That's yours?"
"Yeah. It is."
"Really? What the hell happened? I didn't even recognize it."

=_=;; Then he got all furious at me for making the piece literal. He basically tore it apart, calling it a rushed piece, that it wasn't researched at all, and that the subjects looked like kids. The thing that irked me was that he didn't even look at my sketches online, told me to pick something, and got mad when I did. WTF. )8<

Second project, I came in with an idea that he loved. He saw the sketch, and really liked how I put it. He and I talked, and he said "Put it in a park!" So I took it home, worked on it, and finished it. I brought it in, and what does he tell me? He loves the concept. He hates how I made it. And he hates the background, even though he told me to put it in a park. And here's the kicker- right after that, he said this to me:

"Your Raven pieces were so much better. What the hell happened to make you lose that aesthetic?" Then he paused and told me "Your work last semester and foundation year had these really amazing darks and contrasts in them. Your aesthetic was incredible. It looked like Goya's. What the hell happened to make you not work in it now? Did you like, hire someone to do all your foundation work or something? Because your work this semester is definitely NOT Goya."

I had to bite my lip to keep from screaming at him. It took me 10 hours to paint my project, and he hated it. He took no look at my effort whatsoever.

The third project actually went well, I just had to extend something in my image. The thing that annoyed the hell out of me was what he told another student who asked for help in using other materials that she wasn't familiar with. He looked her in the eye and told her that he wasn't going to be doing any demos this semester "because he was lazy." And then when she told him that she wanted to be taught something for the ridiculous amount of money she paid to go here, he told her to "look for another school, then."

Can you see where this is going? He's been like this to me and other people for the entire semester. At times he picks on me specifically, at other times he's picked on other students. He's told one girl that this semester she's "finally starting to work like an artist." Another time, a girl had commented that she had done a project correctly (jokingly, mind you), and he told her- "Yeah, yeah you did. You really did. What the hell?" I mean, really. How offensive is that? IMO, you don't tell that to anyone, let alone a sophomore. )8<

I've done everything I can for him. I've done all that he wants. And he puts me down every time. I'm sick of it. I really really am. I'm now at the point where I've just thrown in the towel with him and called it quits when it comes to pleasing him. Screw what he wants, it's not worth stressing over anymore. I've even talked to the dean about him. They can't really do anything. He's not coming back next semester though, thank god. All I can do is leave a negative evaluation with him. My department is sure as hell going to get one.

I'm just so frustrated. UGH. )8< I know there are clients like him in the world but seriously, I just can't take it anymore.

The guy sounds like an art critic to me. Honestly, wouldn't that be a good thing? Getting all this critique is just experience for the "outside world" in which bipolar art collectors will always cut down someone's art.

Oh hi, welcome to life.

This guy is like many people you will encounter in your time on this planet. You have the best intentions, put forth effort, or hell, have effort, good intentions, and natural skills, and people will still berate you. Think of this class not as training in art, but training in patience.

Also, if he picks on other students, that should make you feel better. It's him, not you. It's just the way that guy is; besides, his berating has made you try harder just to give him a big "fuck you," has it not?
