There's no set speed you can start out on. Just try to play and mess around until you can read shit, gradually you will get accustomed to higher speeds and you will fall into the standard 6-700~bpm range around the early 20s.

Also, this is the hardest rhythm game out there except for maybe beatmania, so if you wanted easy, be warned.

Using the knife trick or slide card thing to pull out the tray is bad and can damage your drive, as zorahk had already said. I highly recommend getting the right fliptop case (based on your PS2 version) and swap magic discs together - some sites sell these as a bundle and it doesn't cost that much. If you damage your PS2 doing the slide card thing and have to buy another one, that certainly won't be cheaper.

Yeah I would like to be able to read at faster speeds, but my head starts to explode if I get very close to or over 600BPM or so. And the game is very hard, but is also very satisfying when you can pass a song that at one time looked incomprehensible to you. I still suck at the game but I can pass songs in the low level 30s. You will need to be patient and be willing to play some songs over and over until it starts to sink in.

Google is your friend, you should be able to easily find what you're looking for and typically sites that sell flip top covers include instructions for how to determine your PS2 version (so you buy the correct flip top cover for your version so it fits) as well as instructions for how to install the flip top cover.

um....
i would like to say that playing this game is easy because it was for me and i am only 13, i have been playing for a year and i am already up to 40's-41's but i started playing bemani games at the age of five witch means that i have played for 8 years.

i have been using swap-disks for a couple months on a fat ps2 and have had no problems.

i just ordered my dj dao pop'n asc and i am waiting on it to get to my house.

this game will take alot of patience but after you start to pass around 30's the game gets highly addicting.

if you really like this game after a while i would recommend that you pick up Beatmania IIDX because it is also alot of fun and you will pick it up easier because you have already played a bemani game meant for your hands.

and about the speed mods i am comfortable playing songs at around 850 BPM but i depends on the person playing the game and what song or game it is.

p.s. i hope you have fun and get good at pop'n.

There's nothing wrong with the Mini Controller 2 as a controller. It's very responsive and you shouldn't have much of a problem with keys sticking like on the first model.

However, playing pop'n with a mini controller isn't really playing pop'n at all, it's basically just 2dx with a couple more buttons, and generally easier since the charts are all designed for the ASC.

I'm not saying you can't have fun with the mini, just that if you really get into the game you're going to want to move up to an ASC.

If you have the means to make one yourself, that can save a lot of money. I think mine cost about $125 maybe...I can't remember if we were able to use wood we had laying around or had to buy it.
