Marketplace Rating: 5 | Yeah, pop'n music is a very, very fun music game. Personally, it's my favorite Bemani game. If you wanna get into it seriously then get a ASC. Desktop Arcade does a wonderful job on them. I have had mine for over a year now and it works great. Only had a few problems with it, but they got fixed rather quickly. If you don't wanna get into it seriously then buy one of the little mini-con's so you can get the feel of it. Pop'n music surely is not an easy game for beginners though. Takes a while to get up into higher levels. It's great you are getting into Pop'n Music though

...Sorry. Anyways, yeah, Pop'n is my favorite Bemani. If cash is a big concern, you can always play on one of the Konami Pop'n Minis, but an ASC is much nicer. I have a Desktop Arcade ASC myself. Very nice. If I were you, I would keep playing over at your friend's house to find out how much you really like it, and if it's going to be worth it to spend large amounts of money on it.
If you end up deciding it is, start saving!

As for controllers, those you'll have to save up for. If you ever get the money go for a Desktop Arcade or Ransai controller, they're far cheaper than the Konami ASC (still $200 though). Until then I suppose you could use the Pop'n Mini controller, also being sold on play-asia.com and the like.

Actually, if you're really in the red, you could forego the controller altogether and practice on the dualshock for a while. No, it's not the same as an ASC, but neither is the mini-controller, and I'm under the impression that even the experts like to use the dualshock once in a while. (Not me, but I'm pretentious about my Pop'n.)
Well, actually, I guess if you have NO money you could download the GBC version like Mokuba. It's as similar to the arcade experience as playing Ice Climber is similar to actually climbing a mountain (assuming you could find one with both polar bears and pterodactyls on it), but at least you're less likely to injure yourself.

If you can't get an ASC, you could always use a PS2 controller.
It's still fun. I use it.

Nah j/k.
Basically all I am tring to say is that, youll often find yourself broke, ("Now wtf did I do with do with that check!", "-automated voice- You have 0 dollars and 28 cents available for withdrawl.") not to mention the hours of crack-like addiction. ("Mom I swear Ill turn it down after this song!!!")
Personal Reflection Time
You know how akward it is when mom busts in the room and she sees me beating the crap out of this bright ass kid-"Special kid may I add" device along with this demented slap happy music.
Get used to her odd face, and hearing things like. "Why dont you go out there and do drugs, like NORMAL KIDS!!!"
Oh and try not to beat the sh*t out of your first controller (esp with your head.) (the game is pretty tough at times : P)
But here at bemani style, I am sure youll find swell poppers (badasses morelike) and plenty of info to get you started.
I warned you
I love you all

But seriously, your entire post made me ROTFL.
And as to the OP not coming here in over a month... um... oops? I guess that means we should stop posting in this thread. Though I actually like the idea of having a "why you should play this game" thread kicking around.

Oh well, between the inevitable piracy that arises from installing a cheap flip top, and the forum's trading and marketplace, its really not too expensive to get into any of the major Bemani's. The costs comes when you start purchasing other titles and ASCs. Its such an addiction, every time I buy something anymore, I think "for a few more dollars I could be doing crack".

Marketplace Rating: 0 | La Salvia - Two questions. Which one was it, and what exactly did you find amazing?
I say this because...well, PM was never meant to be "amazing". It was designed as a fun way for two or three players (Yes! It was meant to be played with more than two hands!) to make pretty music. Nothing more. And despite 9-Key getting a lot tougher overall, this basic premise...pretty music, pretty characters, go ahead and bring your girlfriend...hasn't ever changed. Furthermore, there are a lot of things that absolutely will not ever change. (#1: The cute bunny lady #2: The cute kitty lady)
Don't get me wrong, I've played them all and I totally love this game. I just want you to as well if you decide to buy later on.
