Default hardware on pop'n AC cabinets

Im looking into buying a machine sometime in the future (hopefully next summer). anyway is it possible to play the older versions (14 and below i think) on the newer hardware they use for 15+? im still doing research on the topic but since it seems cheaper and easier to get the new pcb in a cab rather then upgrade to it. so would downgrade be easier as in finding the hardware wise?

No, it's not possible, but there's no real reason to buy the hardware to play the older versions anyway because each version of the games retains most of the songs.
Also I feel like anything below 15 is unplayable anyway now that I'm so used to having .5 speeds.

It's definitely not because it's "cheaper" to get the new pcb in the cab, it's because if you don't buy the cab with the new PCB, you will not get a new pcb, end of story.

I'm not trying to discourage anything, but you should know that you will have to import this through Japan, the cabinet will cost from 2-5,000 USD and shipping will be around 1,000 to the west coast, since I remember you live in New York add another 500 to get it over there, then add another 500 for customs fees (you have to pay for a broker and taxes).

I spent 3,241.78 but I speak Japanese and so I was able to go through channels which may not be available to you. Also, I live on the west coast, so I didn't have to pay for domestic shipping (I got it at the port with a rental truck)

well that answers that question. i don't have much access to a machine except 8otb which isn't exactly in a convent location for me to get to. so, i'm not really familiar with the revivals and whats kept from one version to the next. guess i was thinking more along the lines of the CS versions but with alot more songs

and i know shipping sucks... tho it would be a good excuse to take a road trip heh. if you don't mind me asking, how long did the process to get your machine take? so i could get a estimate on when to start.

I placed the order on June 15th or so and got it on July 21st I think IIRC.

The whole process takes around a month.

No, Bemani Viper.

I don't know where you got your info, but I wanna just point out that system 16 is 100% wrong on pretty much everything to do with bemani.
