Looking for advice!

I recently visited Japan and fell in love with Pop n music. I mostly played Adventure, just because that was the most common version in the arcades. I live in the US and I'd like to be able to play Popn here! (and there are no arcades that have it around here). Can anyone recommend what I should buy?

Which version of the game (I've heard that 12 is the favorite)?
What kind of controller should I buy (or should I make my own)?
How hard would it be to make my own controller?
And where would I get all this stuff?

I should also mention that I dont really want to spend more than $200 for the game and a controller, so that nice ASC isnt really an option.

If you are new to the Pop'n world, seems alot of people prefer Pop'n Music 8 as a start. 12/Iroha is fine, I think...

As for the controller... Offical ASC asside. It is good, but expensive. XP Get like a Desktop Arcade controller or something.

For making it... Hmm... I'll wait till a pro comes.

You can try to get the game and controller (^^; ) at PlayAsia.com... (I visit there before.. Heaven of Pop'n games you can buy~)

Timer/Minit's has the right idea. It's not absurdly difficult to make your own controller and is basically the cheapest option. The games will run you anywhere from $25 to $50 depending on the version, a used ASC runs anywhere from $100 to $250 depending on the maker of the ASC and functionality of the ASC, and a new one will cost you, at minimum, $250.

So if you want a premade ASC, you might be pushing the envelope a bit.

The KOC version 2 or ASC (any).

Not hard, but your time is better spent.

Thanks guys, that helps. I might have to revise my budget or settle with a Konami mini controller for now.

I've also heard that Popn 8 is a good version for beginners. However, PlayAsia only has the "Konami the Best" version, which I've heard doesnt work with SwapMagic 3(but their website says that Popn 8 is compatible). Any word on this?

I've got Geography class in a minute here but a quick answer: Popn 8 Konami The Best should work with Swap Magic-- I don't see why it wouldn't. The Best versions worked with my SwapMagic discs and PS2.
