I've been wanting to try Pop'n for a while but I wanted to know if theres songs I would like. The themes always look happy and I lean more towards dark music *coughgigadeliccough* but is there music for everyone in Pop'n music?
What I'm asking is this. Does Pop'n music have a good variety of music or just happy songs, Pop'n 14 FEVER especially because that would be the first one I order. Is the interface like IIDX where its very american user friendly, or is it more heavy with the japanese?
Also the controller. How would I adapt to it from IIDX? is this overall more difficult than IIDX? Is the Konami controller on playasia arcade size?
Sorry for all the questions guys but I need a new way to get my fix.

Darkness series, Elegoth/Elegothic Sabat... Well, You name them. There are some songs that like Beatmania-ish, or just from Beatmania crossovers.
The game only exist in Japaniese games. So sadly, you better prepare with a modded PS2. ^^;
The controller.... Let see.... I know Pop'n Music is like Beatmania IIDX, but with full 9-colorfull buttons and not 7 small buttons with a disk-scrach. The difficulty depends on you. I used to play IIDX (Well, more of Beatmania USA) and can only pass like Level 3 songs. (Only lucky-coin is Shining Poloaris. ^^; ) You will eventualy get used to it if you play more.
Play-Asia should have the ASC (the green contoller). But it's pricy. Lots prefer Desktop Arcade or others I know like the Ransai controller. O_O;
Sorry if I am not help. I am getting used to the Pop'n world deeply. (So deeply that I suck at IIDX again. D: )

I wish I have a modded PS2 so I can play my Carnival and tell more of my information. D:
But for all it should't be that hard to start playing. A bit to get used to big buttons and then later speed. (Which is the part I have to work out on if I want to pass songs Lvl. 22+)

If you have experience with IIDX then it'll be easier to adapt to the play style.

It's not dark, dark suggests using muffled synths and syncopations. gigadelic is just straight up Nu Style Gabba (Which is akin to hard trance with Amsterdam influence). Another reason why I liked Gigadelic is that they actually got the genre right this time. XD
Don't worry about the music, avoid Popn14 and you'll like every single other game in the series. Music doesn't differentiate itself from others, good music is good music, whether it's dark or light.

I don't mind the Japanese for I'm proficient in it enough to at least identify the songs by title (I might have some trouble if I want to read every word in the menu).
But anyway,
I was looking at the song list for Pop'n Music 14: Fever (?) and there's a list categorized: "ee'mall." Now, does this have to do with e-musement? Are these songs already in the game or do have to do something to get them?

You just have to keep playing the game to earn points so you can "purchase" the songs in the shop. (Or so I herd.)
Think like those DDR CS games where they have the songs shop. ^^;

Total Tokens: 126,059.07 Donate Tokens | ee'mall songs on FEVER CS are from a different pop'n game, called pop'n Music ee'mall. ee'mall is known for having charts that play like IIDX, and difficult timing (much more the second game, 2nd Avenue, which is also unlocked with 15 ADVENTURE ACs final unlocks).
Honestly, if you want a game that plays like IIDX, get FEVER. It has enough IIDX-like charts in it that you could like if you're a IIDX player. I honestly think FEVER is the worst mix so far released for the PS2, simply because the songs are all too easy to time (yes, I find difficult timing fun), and they are almost all terrible to me. There are also only 4 revivals on pop'n 14 FEVER due to it including all of the first ee'mall game's songs. This causes a serious slant in the genres of the songs in the game, since it is based around the FEVER theme, and you don't get a lot of variety. ADVENTURE, on the other hand, can be interpereted many different ways, and has a variety of genres.
If you want a new pop'n, get either 13 CARNIVAL or wait for 15 ADVENTURE to come out on CS (though it's not announced yet). 11 is also a very good choice too. I am still of the opinion that pop'n 8 and 9 are the best games for starters though, as they are much more newbie-friendly, have great intuitive-but-not-too-simple-or-intrusive interfaces, are very varied in their genres and revivals, and don't have difficult lifebars unless you set them higher than default.
Like it has been said, IIDX experience helps a lot with pop'n, but if you decide to get a small controller or play on a dualshock, don't expect much praise from people, and don't expect to have an easy time playing on a real controller or at the arcade. All too often IIDX players get a small pop'n controller and play it like IIDX, so what happens is you get too used to not moving your arms.
