So I would take it that the mini version 2 is better?

Yeah, pretty much. It allows you to actually 'feel' the buttons more.

Neither one is good, and both are a waste of money, ESPECIALLY if you started out playing in the arcade.

What I hear from my friend is that mini-cons seem to be pretty durable.
Mini-Con v1 is all right (got it for CHEAP), but mine does occasionally have buttons that "stick" though that's usually fixed it if you tap the button lightly again. And yes the buttons are indeed flat against the surface.

If it means anything, I can take down 32s-34s decently with that controller.

It probably is safest to get a mini-con to see how much you like it... maybe you'll get enough to get the ASC.

And... I learned to play pop'n music 8, though 13's good to start with.

I use a mini con v1, and it's not to bad. I've been playing off and on for about a year now. I've never been able to play in the aracade (b/c i live in NC) and i don't really know anyone locally with an ASC that i could borrow or what not

The mini-con def. isn't a terrible choice to go with. I have lots of fun with it. Though I will have to second the fact that it sometimes feels like playing IIDX with colorful notes.

I am now saving up to get an ASC for christmas time .

In that case, are the mini cons v1 really that cheap? Or was your a special deal?

$20, but I don't know if you'll find a deal like that that easily... I was extremely lucky that it happened to appear on vjarmy It was used (thus the low price)... but man, it sure beats playing pop'n with a IIDX KOC :P

Well too bad that the mini con 2 is out of stock in Play-Asia. I wanna play pop'n music too.

I'm thinking about getting pop'n music as well. Which version would you say has the least amount of J-pop in it? I'm looking for a more IIDX style song list.

I'd definitely recommend the Mini 2 over the Mini 1 based on what I've heard.

DDR songs:
Pop'n FEVER CS:
Mikeneko Rock
Breakdown
Be Lovin'
Pompokorin (the Capt. Jack song on 5th Mix)
Balalaika, Carried with the Wind
Colors
Afronova Primevil
Mahou no Tobira
The Least 100 Sec
Pop'n Carnival CS:
Moon
Honey Punch
Twin Bee
Butterfly Remix
Nijiiro
Matsuri Japan
Rumble Roses (mix of Rumble Roses songs, 1/3 of it is Look to the Sky)
Graduation
Mars War 3
Pop'n Iroha CS:
Love2Sugar
Jet World
Graduation
Curus
Mugen no Hikari
Knock-Out Regrets (English + Japanese vocal versions)
Pop'n 11 CS:
Votum Stellarum (original version)
Murmur Twins
DDR Megamix
Arrabbiata
Feeling of Love
Stars***
Tino's White Horse
Kagerou
Rhythm & Police (original version)
777 (was just put on Universe 3)
DanDanDou (sequel to Daikenkai, it's on SN1)

D-Crew:
Pop'n FEVER CS:
DaDaDa Dancing (D-Crew + Tomosuke)
full-consciousness green
Be Lovin'
Pop'n Carnival CS:
Fortune Tale Beat
Pop'n Iroha CS:
Curus
Missa-Remi
Pop'n 11 CS:
Missa-Remi
UK Hit Chart/My Gifts

As for J-Pop, there isn't much as far as licensed/actual music, and there's a fair deal on each mix.

I'd suggest any really. IMO the best mixes are 11>13>12>Fever, but they're all really solid. Going back before those is something I'd hold off on until you have those 4.

@Bert2DX: probably FEVER for more IIDX/GFDM crossovers tbh, because of ee'MALL 1st Ave. as far as non-crossovers (IIDX-ish stuff), I'd suggest either Iroha or FEVER

IIDX (crossovers):
Pop'n Fever CS:
memories
diamond jealousy
the least 100 sec
ubertreffen
i'm in love again
colors
+a ton of 5-key stuff (if you want to know what let me know)
pop'n carnival cs:
moon
starmine remix
nijiiro
pop'n iroha cs:
beyond the earth
sayonara heaven
starmine remix
airflow
ultra high-heels
oosanbashi remix
foundation of our love
pop'n 11 cs:
votum stellarum
beyond the earth
sayonara heaven
murmur twins
gradius full-speed
feeling of love
stars***
