Mini-Con v1: Flat buttons; they're set flat against the surface of the controller. Mini-Con v2: Round-top buttons; they extrude from the surface of the controller.
What I hear from my friend is that mini-cons seem to be pretty durable.
Mini-Con v1 is all right (got it for CHEAP), but mine does occasionally have buttons that "stick" though that's usually fixed it if you tap the button lightly again. And yes the buttons are indeed flat against the surface.
If it means anything, I can take down 32s-34s decently with that controller.
It probably is safest to get a mini-con to see how much you like it... maybe you'll get enough to get the ASC.
And... I learned to play pop'n music 8, though 13's good to start with.
I use a mini con v1, and it's not to bad. I've been playing off and on for about a year now. I've never been able to play in the aracade (b/c i live in NC) and i don't really know anyone locally with an ASC that i could borrow or what not
The mini-con def. isn't a terrible choice to go with. I have lots of fun with it. Though I will have to second the fact that it sometimes feels like playing IIDX with colorful notes.
I am now saving up to get an ASC for christmas time .

$20, but I don't know if you'll find a deal like that that easily... I was extremely lucky that it happened to appear on vjarmy It was used (thus the low price)... but man, it sure beats playing pop'n with a IIDX KOC :P

I'm thinking about getting pop'n music as well. Which version would you say has the least amount of J-pop in it? I'm looking for a more IIDX style song list.
I'd definitely recommend the Mini 2 over the Mini 1 based on what I've heard.

As for J-Pop, there isn't much as far as licensed/actual music, and there's a fair deal on each mix.
I'd suggest any really. IMO the best mixes are 11>13>12>Fever, but they're all really solid. Going back before those is something I'd hold off on until you have those 4.
@Bert2DX: probably FEVER for more IIDX/GFDM crossovers tbh, because of ee'MALL 1st Ave. as far as non-crossovers (IIDX-ish stuff), I'd suggest either Iroha or FEVER
