It's also suppose to be designed so that they can play it on a SMARTboard. So, the concept should be easy to understand, and should require little to no reading. After a few thoughts on what I wanted to do, I thought I should simulate the popular handheld game Simon, which is simply memorizing patterns using different colours and sounds. For some reason, the day I thought of that idea, I also couldn't get Far e@st network out of my head, so then I thought of the idea of encorporating pop'n music with this idea, since the theme is cute, and can appeal to younger children.
Here is what I'm thinking:
I would have the two modes, 5-button and 9-button, like in pop'n, so that anyone can play the game and have some sort of challenge (I'm hoping this approach will get me bonus marks). However, to avoid confusion, I would be using the 5 leftmost keys, as opposed to the ones in the center. This way, all the colours would be different in 5-key.
In each mode, there are two displays:
-the buttons, which will be what the player uses to enter the patterns
-the pop-kun, which are arranged in the same layout as the buttons according to colour.
The group of 5 or 9 pop-kun demonstrate the pattern first, and then the player mimics the pattern using the buttons below. To avoid confusion, I guess I can include labels that appear and disappear (for example "Watch" and "Play"). Unlike in regular pop'n, I won't have the columns with the pop-kun falling towards the buttons.
But yeah, thats the jist of it. So does anyone have any ideas? Some things I would need to know is if this would be easier to do this in Visual Basic or Flash, and what else can I do to make this easier to understand for the special education students. The thing is, even though we have the option to do it in Visual Basic or Flash, we are much more educated in Visual Basic. However, according to my teacher, it's easier to load sounds in Flash than Visual Basic. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. And I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum. (because I know this is the pop'n forum, but I don't know if it qualifies as pop'n gameplay)

If you want, I can help with some graphics, and If you do make it, my suggestion is to have characters. I have Gifs of them, so If you want, I can send them to you. Also, since it is flash, mabey you should just do their Idle animations throughout the song. Another thing that I can do is get you some song mp3's. I can only get the songs from 1-12. So yeah. tell me if you need some help. another thing you might like is that on this site, you can view note charts. so there you can get the official notes to some songs.
Edit: Here's some songs with character animations, and some other stuff. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X2Z1LPU9
The songs are
Creamy
Bubble bath girl
Sayonara, heaven
Curus
Love 2 sugar
I will give you the song banners later.

I will give you the song banners later. | Uhh...you see...it's not the actual pop'n music gameplay. It's simply the game Simon with a pop'n music theme. So, it's not going to be like playing pop'n music. The only thing that is similar is the controller layout.
In case you don't know this is simon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_%28game%29
Thanks for the link though.

You still get to chose 5 button, or 9 button, and the only thing that seems different to me is that there are no pop-kun. If you try to coppy the notes, that's close enough to me. I've played Simon too. But please still have characters!!!!!!!

But I guess I could push it to the limit for those who want it to be that way. I would need a lot of help, and I'm guessing with characters and such I would HAVE to do it in Flash...even though I already got started with Basic.
Hmmm...
