I have a question...what are the "game levels" in the Options section? It goes from 1-4, but is there a difference?

I thought it was a combination of shortening the timing between good and great as well as making the bar harder to fill and easier to lose.

Also(though this may not be a tech question), is it just me, or are the buttons on a Ransai further apart than arcade specs? I was at AI today and played a few rounds of Pop'n, and beat a 38 that I normally have no chance of beating back home-- I was told the arcade difficulty setting was default as well.

Hello, I am new to Pop'n, have been playing 16 Party for a month and a half, and is currently stucked at the level 36 barrier... I can pass the bulk of level 35s and most of the level 36 songs, but I can hardly hit across it. I can touch a few level 37s and 38s but thats it, the rest simply gets too hard for me.

I used to be playing IIDX much more, until Popn' arrived at my arcade, and I started playing Popn, and I love popn now =D. However, I can't play without beatpop. If I play normal pops, I can go to max level 28~ without getting raped.

Any tips? I am having problems with Chords mixed into scales(Double Scales with Chords for one of them etc, easier ones like Ali Pro EX is ok but some of them just gets me totally), or really fast scales that runs back and forth(AKA The start of Color's EX).

Right now I've read through the first few pages, it seems like you guys are putting the HS to quite insane levels X_X. For me, I can only handle 150bpm @ 4.5, 180 @ 4 etc~.

Where's your arcade? 16 party, is it in the US?

As for you Ratna:

Older Ransai's have screwed up button spacing, they made them .25 too far apart or something.
You might want to invest in a Dj Dao if you like the way you played at the arcade

I have a question about the arcade version of pop'n. Since I was introduced to pop'n I have played pop'n mostly on my home TV or one of my friend's TV. Well, I am studying abroad in Japan and the arcade near me has pop'n music party. For some reason the timing seems different to me. When I played at TGA it seemed like that too. Is the screen shorter? I just can't seem to time the song right. My boyfriend tells me to play on cools to get used to the timing. Will that really help? Is there anything else I can do? I am taking a Japanese 101 class so I am pretty sure I can't ask the locals. Not anytime soon anyway.

Nah its not in the US. Hmm... Getting better, but my left hand is still too retarded to do many things and I have difficulty with Chord Stairs which is rampant in 39s and 40s.

I've never played Pop'n at home, but maybe it has to do with how close your face is to the screen? I don't know about your home set up, but at the arcade your face is only about a feet away from the screen.

I guess just use lower hi-speeds until you are comfortable.

OK, I'm playing Pop'n 9 lately. Is it me or is the syncing different than Pop'n 12 or higher?

No, that's just you. The syncing is exactly the same (there are so few offbeat songs in pop'n that I can only name Enka [not the remix] off the top of my head). The problem you have is that the interface is very different from any of the others. Interfaces from 7, 8, and Best Hits are the same, 9 is different from those, and 10-14 also have a different interface from the previous ones. The interface determines the size of the screen, which also controls how fast the notes fall, and where the red line is and if it is actually on beat or not. On 9, I tend to hit later because the red line is on beat, it's just further down the screen. I also use speeds about 1 and 1/4 higher than on 10+

Also, not sure if you care, but the default difficulties (as in lifebar difficulties) on 7-9 and Best Hits are completely wrong from what they are in 10-14. If you want to fix them, change the setting to 3/4 instead of the default 2/4 and you'll have a more accurate lifebar.

So, I can do short scales fine, but when I get a scale that spans the whole controller, I have trouble actually hitting every note as I go. This is odd, because it only happens when I try to do normal scales. If I'm given something like Euro Beat H or the like I can hit almost every note fine...

Any tips other than keep trying?

Play songs that have slower scales, like around 100-120 BPM 16ths. Practice hitting every note separately, then go up to a song that's like 130 or 140 and try to do it. This works for songs that are fast too, just halve the bpm (cyber gagaku 145, cyber flamenco 140, progressive 130, for examples). Try NOT to panic and just roll your hands across the buttons in the direction of the scale, because that's not going to work on harder songs or at the arcade.

Hmmm I need some aid doing fast scales. Really fast ones or those that really span left and right over and over...

Some example of fast scales would be say, near the very beginning of Schrodinger's Cat Hyper, that 2x fast scales to the left before the start of the trumpet. I can never hit those.

Next would be songs like White Birds Mirage Mix EX. I hate it with a passion... The scales left right left right inside outside upside down makes me wanna cry... I can clear it without problem but my hands get screwy and weary after it. I can barely do those well and it goes from Cool -> Great -> Good -> Bad all the time. -_-

Maybe I should take a video of myself playing next time, perhaps it could be something wrong with the way I press them.

I only played Popn for 3 months... Me ish still Beginner.

ToyCon is just mashing and hoping for me right now so I won't elaborate on that. As for Visual Remix, just hit the buttons as if they were 8th notes at 270 BPM; You shouldn't have to move your wrists at all for the scales in that song because they're slow enough to just move your hands to do. A good example would be YouTube - 97K Cowboy : Blue River EX (43), incredible Pop'n'music ; Take a look at how much he moves his hands and how little he uses his wrists. If you move your hands like that on Visual Remix you should be able to get all Greats and Cools on the scales without much problem. If that's not helping, your timing probably needs a bit of work, but there's no reason for you to fail the song if you're doing it that way.

If I can get a video of what I've been talking about since this thread was created while I'm in Japan, I'll post it in here for people to see. I'll try to get a good example of what I am talking about and an example of what everyone is doing wrong.
