Default Shiawase wo utau shi? Shiawase wo utau uta? What really?

幸せを謳う詩 (Elegy, from pop'n 10)

Many people say "Shiawase wo utau uta". I say "Shiawase wo utau shi". The old edition of Asaki's Wikipedia entry contained both. If it's "utau uta", is it one of Asaki's weird pronunciations again? I converted the kanji here and it said "shi". What is it really?

詩 is read as both shi and uta.
Shi is the onyomi reading while uta is the kunyomi.

I'm pretty sure "uta" is the correct reading here, since it's an individual character.

Doesn't it sound painful to the ears when "Shiawase wo utau uta" is the pronunciation, because of redundancy? I find it painful to the ears, and the mouth.

EDIT: What's onyomi, and what's kunyomi?

Onyomi is the approximate Japanese pronunciation of the original Chinese sounds. It's normally used for multikanji compounds. (For example, 生命 is read seimei rather than namainochi. Sei and mei are the onyomi of the two kanji, which sounds like their original Chinese.)

Kunyomi is the Japanese reading of kanji. So namainochi from my example above would be the kunyomi reading. Kunyomi is normally read for kanji in isolation. So yes, it would be Shiawase wo Utau Uta and it would be pronounced "shiawase wo utau'ta" - truncating the second u (of uta) so that you get a more fluid sound.

Brett has a point. Songs are customarily referred to by their genre names both among Japanese and (more importantly in your case) American players.

Or you could use the translation, which is "Happiness Expressed Through Poetry".

But if you do that for god's sake use a good font.

Yeah, but not in DDR or DDR stepfiles. I can understand why it'd be important to straighten it out for that purpose.

I've always gone with uta, I'm pretty sure that's it.

What do DDR and DDR stepfiles have anything to do with pop'n music genre names?

The original goal of this thread was to find out the real name for an accurate stepfile banner.
